Keep Losing! Arg!!

Ok so my friend and me just finished the scenarios...so thought we would go back to regular playing!

We started off with the AO that have never beaten us before, Shudde-M’ell, Glaaki, Eihort, Yibb-Stll...(herald/ guardians) guess what we lost to everyone!

Where using BGoTW and DW...not sure if that’s a hard combinations or something?

Seem we can do nothing right and everything goes wrong...vs. Shuddle-M’ell we sealed 9 gates and 5 gate burst...Jenny was stuck in the wood for 5 turns the other day! Arg!

I take it you are playing a house rules varient, because if you sealed 9 gates you would have won at 6.

Eihort is evil with the Black Goat herald no stopping him waking up...he killed all 4 investigators in the final Epic Battle and had 15 doom tokens on him...he kept taking use out one at a time!

It must be the BGotW expansion because we have lost 6 straits now...every time we seal a Gate the next card is a Gate Burst at that location! Shub-Niggurath killed us this time...early one got the Rumor that removes all clues and poor Lee kept getting sucked into Rl'yeh over and over, etc

If all that has changed is the Black Goat herald, then that seems to be your problem. I don't have the expansion yet, but it does look like one tough motherfather.

Only played the Herald a few times...its all those Gate Burst :(

Finally brooke our losing streak of 7! games Shudde M'ell destroyed Arkham again a turn before the last Seal..

Beat Glaaki...final score 26, Chen CFC and the terror lv went up 0 times...even with Disturbing the Dead Rumor out a few turns.

Now to retire BGotW for awhile.

OK I am just on my first game (just the basic game).... what is a Gate Burst?

Best thing since base-AH partido_risa.gif ! In base-AH, once you seal a location (Elder Sign, 5 Clues or by some other means), you never have to worry about that location opening a gate ever again. With gate bursts, say you've sealed Witch House, if you draw gate burst Mythos card with WH as the location, the seal breaks (get removed) and a gate opens there. No doom token is added though. Gate bursts remove the safety net regarding seals. Also, base-AH gets boring after you sealed the 4 major spots, most of the Mythos cards would just do nothing regarding the doom track/helping the GOO wake.

Gate bursts were introduced in Dunwich Horror and can be found in KH and Black Goat of the Woods. If you're playing with only 2 investigators AND want gate bursts, BGotW is probably the best bet. DH and KH both add extra boards (not necessary to use of course, but seems like a waste if you don't use 'em), which can make 2-inv games, shall we say very challenging. Black Goat Herald alone with gate bursts from the expansion should probably thin your hairline an inch or two, not bad for a single small-box expansion partido_risa.gif . Personally, I play solo with 4 investigators, it works very nicely with DH board added.

You could also introduce gate bursts into the base game fairly easily. Any time a Mythos card tries to open a gate at a location with an Elder Sign, roll a die. On a 1, treat it as a gate burst. Since gate bursts add two clue tokens to the board (in separate locations), you could also add a second clue token to a random location.

I'll play with four next time. I am playing first solo game to elarn and having great fun. I plan on adding Dunwich ASAP. After I play the base with Dunwich a couple times, I am going "all in" with all the expansions........

anyway, with just 2 investigators, I find myself behind schedule with everything. I cannot gather clues, defeat monsters and close gates, heal get San re-plenished, etc. and keep up. Currently there are 6 open gates (though I am about to close and seal one, which will be my 2nd), but monsters abound and there are 3 in the outskirts, Terror Level is 2, Doom is 6. I just see the AO (Yig) awakening soon and there is nothing I can do about it and he is just going to smoke me in combat sad.gif . I just do not see how I can beat him in combat.

Yig's a sissy, even if you don't prepare (i.e. get people Blessed, go shopping to weapons, etc.). With 2 investigators, you'll need 20 successes and Yig only packs a -3 mod without any resistances/immunities (okay, so if you got people whose max Fight is 3, you might need some luck). Sure, you're Cursed at the start of battle, but after the first round, you'll have a chance to rid yourself of the Curse. IIRC, Yig's attack is a Speed check that damages both Sta and San by 1, so slow 3/7 or 7/3 people might die quickly. Whiskey/Food can get that extra round you need. Ditto for Vincent "I'm Craptastic" Lee or Carolyn Fern.

I picked him as this is my first game and from what I have read, he is the "easiest" to defeat. We shall see. Next time I play I will go the random route of picking the investigators and the AO.
