Gaining Weapon Traits - Improving One's Gear

By venkelos, in Black Crusade

I was flipping through Black Crusade, and I found the write-up for one Inquisitor Victoria Aldrich (p.367). She has what I like to think of as a very nice plasma pistol, sporting things such as Proven and Sanctified. Now, I'm not quite as knowledeable here as I might want to be, so I was wondering if anyone might be able to tell me, is there an in-game way to take a character's existing weapon, say my plasma pistol, and give it additional traits, say Proven (X)? I know that in Dark Heresy: Ascension (duck the flung table), they have rules for requisitioning new weapons, or having existing ones improved. Could players in BC, or DW, or whatever, do the same thing (using something other than Influence)? Is there something your tech-priest friend could do, to improve it?

I'm just curious because, like so many, I think it would be cool to get similarly badass weapons for my high-end characters (if I ever get any); weapons that aren't available, base, and I'm not too sure what you'd have to do to get a Sanctified, Proven (4) anything, other than requisitioning it from the higher Inquisitors, or having an accomplished tech-priest and a high-ranking Ecclesiarch do their various jujus upon it.

Extrapolate? Thanks much.

The crafting rules on pg 94 could very well allow the creation of weapons with extra traits. Especially if the character in question has Trade: Armorer. While this doesn't have any ACTUAL rules attached, the benefit I read from it is that it allows the character to design new weapons, rather than merely modify or copy existing ones. Available to any character with a decent intelligence score and the tech-use/trade: armorer skill. No Adeptus Mechanicus allegiances required!

Likewise, anyone with Daemonology and a solid int score can perform the rituals needed to craft a daemon weapon, though the ability to forge weapons helps here too. That or a seriously outrageous body count for the weapon in question. A psy rating wouldn't go amiss either, but it is not actually a requirement. This usually lets you score a few neat traits and extra damage. Also, mad street cred. Nothing says "I'm gangsta" like a gun that drools liquid warp flame.

Except maybe a force weapon tattoo that drools liquid warp flame. Which, for the record, is truly insanely scary nasty when wielded by a decently capable Sorcerer. Though, tbh, that's more of a problem with force weapons technically being able to generate killing will on every HIT, rather than every attack. Might be worth house ruling.

I agree with Reverend Mort on this. The stream-lined rules for crafting in Black Crusade would be a good basis to work from in order to get specific weapons, both on the Trade (Armourer) and the Deamonlogy Skills.. Of course individual quests or goals could enter into it as well, working in character hooks and the like depending on the weapon quality you seek. In a DH game getting a sanctified weapon might involve doing a quest for the Ministorum and getting a blessing from one of their higher ranking priests. I'd caveat my agreement with that if it's astartes/legion equipment then modifications like that should be left in the hands of particular forge worlds or the techmarines of the deathwatch, and a Chaos Techmarine which I'm sure is floating around on the forums.

Concerning Force Weapons I'm kinda split. though I like the mechanics of how they work if using swift or lightning attack I kinda agree that one should house rule it to be per attack and not hit.

I don't think you should really limit the crafting or modification of Legion weapons. Black Crusade, unlike deathwatch, doesn't take the approach that there's something inherently "Special" about Legion weapons. They're just bigger guns that fire bigger bullets, pack more of a punch etc etc.

This is made imminently clear in the new rules for non-space marines using them. They merely count them as one size category larger, and take a penalty if they can't match the inhuman strength of the marines.

Hell, even in the Imperium it's the often human Adeptus Mechanicus that maintains the Astartes arsenals. So I think anybody who can modify weapons would be equally capable of modifying Legion ones. Especially since the entire "thrill" of the Heretech is the ability to move away from Imperial superstition and do actual SCIENCE!

Preferably in all caps and with lots of exclamation points.

Each "SCIENCE!!!" should also be followed by a manic laughter. And don't forget the sizzling of comically sized Tesla coils in the backdrop.
