Profit Factor and Thrones

By Zaakath, in Rogue Trader Gamemasters

Hey everyone,

I'm starting up a game for a group of friends and was wondering what people generally use as a conversion ration for PF to thrones. I can't seem to find it in any of the books, but I might just be missing it too.

Thanks!

Don't worry, you haven't missed it- there isn't one. In fairness, there's no way to properly and accurately convert between the two, as the Throne is an imaginary currency dreamt up by the Administratum of one solitary sector of the Imperium for the purposes of facilitating interstellar trade (and making it easy to calculate tithes). It's like a Russian, an Englishman, a Spaniard, a Finn and a Japanese man getting down to broker a trade. They're all going to contribute their own currency, but the odds are the deal will be worked using $USD.

Profit Factor, on the other hand, represents not merely money, precious metals, gemstones and other fungible items, but how much credit people are prepared to give you, what kind of reputation you have, how many favours you are owed, what kind of discounts people might offer, how much prestige your name brings to the brand...

Essentially, if you've ever heard the phrase "free to those who can afford it", that's the sort of financial level even the more impoverished Rogue Trader and his retainers work at.

If you feel you have to make the conversion, however, it should be possible to work it out by determining (for your campaign world) what the average size of a gang or common labour guild is, how that breaks down into career archetypes, and what the mean career rank those persons are likely to be. That'll let you work out the average monthly income (over and above subsistence level) for such a group by comparing it to the pay tables in Dark Heresy. Cross-referencing that to Table 9-34 in the Rogue Trader core book (p.270, iirc) will let you equate that to profit factor, although that will give inflated values for the Throne. You may be able to correct that if you have values for the probable amount of pull/political power/favours owed to/influence of various organisations you can plug in to the math, but offhand I'm not sure where you'd get them, or how you'd get them into the same units as the rest of that side of the equation.
I could do a quick-and-dirty number crunch and walk you through it more thoroughly, but I honestly don't see what benefit I'd gain, my DH books are not to hand, and it's 2am now.

TL;DR- there isn't an official conversion rate, but RT players can pretty much ignore the cost anyway. You can work out a very rough conversion, but it's a hell of a lot of work for no real reward.

Thanks for the good reply. That is basically what I was figuring it was. Now to throw them into the **** with NO thrones...

Kidding... mostly.
