"At Any Time"

By LastOneStanding21, in Talisman Rules Questions

Hi Everyone,

I just had a question; another player in the game used a fate to reroll his die for combat. After he spent his fate but before he made the die roll he wanted to use the Potion of Dragons Blood to increase his strength because the card says "at any time." I said that's not valid b/c fate is for rerolling the die only. I could continue on here with our debate but that pretty much sums it up. Can he spend a fate point to reroll a die and use an item that says "at any time" to effect the outcome?

Thanks everyone!

I would say no. Fate is used to reroll the outcome of a result and not to "cancel" an encounter. Items and spells must be used before or after rolling the die in combat, but he is already in it so using a fate only affects the result of his die roll, and not to reset the combat.

Best regards

If the battle rolls have taken place, he can only pay a fate to reroll his attack roll. He cannot then decide to use the Potion!!! That is trying to bend the rules to his liking lol

When on the topic. We've not tried to use an object such as dragon's blood when rerolling although it has happened that we've used lucky charm and similiar objects/spells which affect the die roll. I would assume this is ok but still it doesn't harm to get it clarified. So what do you guys think?

Have a nice weekend, hopefully you'll get a chance to play!

Using items to affect die rolls are perfectly fine and paying fate. There are a few exceptions of course, like the Amazon's ability to fight again etc!

I thought that when you roll the die for combat you're out of the "Cast Spells" phase of combat (I'm quoting Rulebook page 10); if this is true, the statement "Any effects or abilities that affect a character’s Strength or Craft must be implemented before the attack roll is made" is applicable and then you can't play anything when you reroll, unless rerolling with Fate means that you're back to the "Cast Spells" phase. This could be the way to go but rules have no hints about it.

The only case I can recall is the Twist of Fate Spell, which is explicitely used when you pay Fate to roll again. However, if someone wants to invest extra resources in the second roll and forgot/saved them in the first, I'm fine with it.

I agree.

I am a bit confused with what talismansilat says.

You can't use a potion of strength etc after paying a fate or other cards that effects your strength

So why may a character effects his die roll after paying a fate by using lucky charm?

Oke, twist of fate is a similar effect that is legal after paying a fate. It still sounds a bit weird.

So,.. cards that effects die rolls can be used after paying fate..mmm

After die rolls have taken place for battle or psychic combat, you may use fate to reroll the die. You may use a Lucky Charm to then choose the result if you wish to.

"Any effects or abilities that affect a character’s Strength or Craft must be implemented before the attack roll is made." - rulebook page 10

If you wish to use an item to affect your fate reroll you can, as it is an effect which only affects the die roll, not your Strength or Craft!

Yes correct! It is well within the rules of the game.

Example:

Lucky Charm can be used before you make any die roll remember. So it is perfectly fine to use a Lucky Charm before you make your fate reroll!

****, just press the wrong button, and my reply is gone.

I would use the lucky charm for other things.

And if the lucky charm is really needed, then you can better use it right away, instead of first paying a fate for a second roll.

That will cost a fate too.

I don't think that this will happen in our games.

Not that I would do it either Velhart lol But some might I suppose!

Ell.

In our games it usually happens when characters have much fate. But at least when the chances are even to succeed on a roll you really want to make.

Yes, it might cost you a fate and a lucky charm, but sometimes it saves you the use of both of them as well.
