Good uses for Galbert Glover.

By MrGloverGlover, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Ok, my surname is Glover, as such I intend to deliver the beatdown to my mates with Galbert Glover, my namesake. Not joust tournament play or anything 'full-on' like that, but in melee play, certainly.

I keep looking at him thinking that there's possibilities in there, but I just can't seem to make it click.

I did think it'd be quite amusing with 'To be a wolf', but that'd only fool opponents a couple of times I guess - although it would potentially force your opponent to let you have what you wanted (as long as what you wanted wasn't an event), otherwise you'll just stand every character in play and keep recycling TBAW.

Does anybody have any other interesting/powerful/unusual uses for ol' Galbert?

to grab tbaw, you would need one already in the discard pile since the one you play will still be moribund when you search. one option is to search for dupes that were discarded. since targ burn is uncommon in melee, you could try a search deck, drop valar, then search to get your dupes back. this is not tourney level, but it is the best i can think of for casual melee using glover.

The problem with Galbart is he only allows you to search your discard pile IF you are using an effect that would search your whole deck (And not just part of it). Therefore, the only real use of him is with To be a Wolf, pretty much every other search effect in Stark is either way too speciifc (specific type of characer, for example) or only lets you search part of your deck (Family, Duty Honor or Luwin)

Could you not also use Summoning Season and Building Season to search the discard pile?

At the Gate also works. Widow's Watch. Jeyne Westerling.

A lot of Stark's search is the top decking stuff, but there's definitely stuff you can use to use Glover.

I never read it that specific. In our meta, we use it like, if you were going to search your deck, part of your deck, the top 5 of your deck, whatever of your deck, its searching your deck. Galbart just reverses that and allows you to do the same search that would occur in your deck, but in your discard pile.

The latest FAQ includes a question that directly addresses the issue:

I have Maester Luwin (Forging the Chain F21) and Galbart Glover (Called by the Conclave F41) out at the same time. If I win a challenge with Maester Luwin can I search the top 5 cards of my discard pile?

No. Searching the top 5 cards of your deck does not count as searching your entire deck.

Well that sucks. LoL.

As I said, the search is very specific - in the case of the above three cards, they get you Maesters, Dupes and Kings - and I don't think you'll find your Luwins/Robbs in the discard pile that often. Yes, Galbart Glover would work with them, but it's very specific search and I don't think it's as much of an advantage as it might seem.

Well, he is also immune to opponents' events, he at least has that going for him.

He can be used to make Direwolf decks more consistent and resistant to Attachment hate.

Galbert Glover + Widow's Watch

Galbert Glover + Winterfell Kennels

Thanks for the replies so far, everyone.

Great catch on the moribund problem, Hoyalawya... I'm very grateful you brought that up before I cheated all of my friends, hahah. I suppose it'll still be pleasant if it comes off with two of them, but not exactly powerful. Somebody will fall for it at some point... and that's all it takes sometimes!

Good point by sWhiteboy, too... I hadn't really considered using it as direwolf attachment protection, but that's very likely to be how he'll end up given what's been unearthed so far.

Of course, if anyone's got any game-breaking combo of devastating power, my ears are still open demonio.gif
