If Fantasy Flight released a "collectors edition" of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, what would you like to see?

By GoblynKing, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Though I haven't played any of the Warhammer 40k games that Fantasy Flight produce, I have been rather impressed with the recent collectors editions of both Deathwatch and Black Crusade that have been released.

I would LOVE to see Warhammer Fantasy RP get a similar treatment somewhere down the line.

Since the game is more component heavy than the 40k games, I would foresee a Fantasy Roleplay collectors set probably being broken down into two items...a nice thick full color hardcover tome, possibly in a nice decorative slipcase like the 40k versions, that would collect all the core rules in a single volume. To supplement the hardcover, a gorgeous collectors edition Vault that would combine all the necessary play aids and components in a single box. This box would be much bigger than a standard Vault (player, gm, creature), but smaller than the core box, and probably cast is a sturdy resin like the 40k collectors covers. The components themselves could even get a facelift, with glass and metal tokens, card dividers for organizing all the action/talent cards, a full set of dice (maybe cast in wood or metal), and maybe even a full color fold out map of the Empire?

One can dream.

What would you like to see in such a release if it were to happen?

I would not like to see a collectors edition. I'd like to see them keep their focus on new products, not fleecing us to re-buy stuff we've already purchased.

The little love that WFRP gets is diluted enough without them getting off topic on "luxury item" stuff.

I don't believe that was my question. Regardless, when the collectors sets of Deathwatch and Black Crusade it didn't seem to interrupt the 40k rpg release schedule in the least. Also, no one is holding a gun to your head to buy such a product...It wouldn't even be required. Sheesh.

Polished and clarified rules.

Addition of Free Actions. ( I use D&D's free action system)

Clarifications on if spells with durations can be canceled at will by a wizard (free action or manoeuvre)

A paragraph on almost all spell cards giving examples of how they are used, and clarifying their rules. I can easily think of 3 Grey Wizard cards I would like to see an in-depth segment on.

Additional Rank spells for every School or Cult

A section on Zealots and Zealots of other faiths.

Historic character stats. I would like to see several example characters at mid to high ranks (what were Sigmar's stats, or the Emperor, etc.)

A section on common phrases and slang of the empire.

All great ideas...but moreso for either a new addition (which I don't believe any of us want at the moment) and/or an "Empire Campaign Setting Boxed Set Thing".

I'd hope that a "collector's set" would steer away from updating the rules, and would focus more on shiny new presentation. Btw, the hardcovers already did a pretty **** good job of clarifying most of the rules problems from the boxed set.

My frustrations aren't directed at you. :)

40k has a lot more support and people working on the project. They can put out stuff like this, without breaking a stride.. WFRP doesn't. For them to put out a collectors edition when they can't even bother to do scenario/fan-authorship contests or support their forums in any way other than a periodic product announcement I think would be kind of ridiculous. Yes, fun to fantisize about, but little more than that for me.

The main thing here is how much of your existing market will buy the product.

For 40K, it's a traditional game, which means a lot of groups play with more than one core book. Buying one more core book isn't out of the question for those groups. It's common enough a practice that buying an additional book that you may not even use isn't that far out in left field.

For 3ed WFRP, it's a different market. It's much rarer for groups to have more than one Core set, and even those that do aren't in the market for another. Would you buy another Core set that you would be hesitant to use because it's too nice?

In addition is the way that these deluxe editions serve as decorative pieces. It is easy for people to have a cool book on display. For 3ed, it's much more difficult. Sure there may be a cool box, but are you going to have all those foil cards out on a table for people to look at? Not if you own a cat.

I'm not saying that absolutely no one will buy it, but I don't think enough people will to make it profitable (and it would likely lose money). This format doesn't lend itself to the market very well. You should look to the already existing guides as the "collectors edition."

That may be true, especially considering the release of the player's guide, which already has "most" of the actions in it. If once the Elf product(s) come out, and they made a new "players guide" style book with all the actions listed again, this would make a ton of sense.

To stay on topic though:

* all careers, talents, an actions placed in convenient form (like they are in the player's guide currently)

* all errata applied and rules clarifications made (chop about 20,000 words out of the text).

* Monster/bestiary listed with ALL applicable cards on the same pages as their descriptions and stats for much easier reference (I much preferred the GM guide of the core set to the stack fo random cards that the vaults presented...I know, I know, some of you have all the time in the world to appreciate implementation of the cards..I don't. ;)

* A new sceanario

* Lose the "novice GM advice" columns. Its clear that this game is not for novice GMs, so let's not kid ourselves ;)

* A streamlined char-gen-friendly layout.

* a clear condition summary

* actual suggestions on modifiers

* continue the guides trend of using actual play examples
