Anyone interested in doing some creative writing?

By Lucien Kallus, in Dark Heresy

Im trying to flesh out the Tempestus Segmentum and wondered if anybody would be interested in some writing.

Im looking for pretty much anything from single characters (NPCs) to, rival gangs, planets, sytems, ships, Inquisitors; pretty much anything goes. That said i'm looking for things outside whole armys (as in 40k TT) and would like to see things apart from Space Marines... . FFG style material or Forge World (Imperial Armour) like pieces would be exceptional.

Anyway, if you're interested and feel like collaborating please feel free to let me know or even post ideas up here.

nobody at all? Im quite surprised

I'd love to be able to help but I'm not that well scholored in the 40k canon and have a rather limited free time at the moment. :(

I'd love to help - I really enjoy writing that kind of stuff.

However, I would say that fleshing out the Segmentum Tempestus as a whole is very ambitious! A whole Segmentum would be hundreds (possibly thousands) of Sectors, each the size of the Calixis Sector. It would be 100-200 Marine Chapters, several hundred thousand Inquisitors etc.

There have been attempts to produce fan made works set in individual sectors : the leading example is probably the Anargo Sector project. I've never been involved in it, but a few guys who haunt these boards have been, and it is genuinely an epic and incredibly impressive acheivement.

I would suggest that if you're working on your own, it might be an idea to start small and expand from there: start with a Subsector within the Segmentum Tempestus, rather than a whole Segmentum. The subsector would consist of 20-40 worlds, rather than hundreds of thousands.

Most people start with a list of named worlds, then draw up a map of those worlds, identifying major trade and warp routes between each world. Flesh out the worlds, then flesh out their inhabitants. Flesh out how the worlds interact, what threats they face, what military forces they possess.

With that, you've got a strong base to expand in any direction you want: you can raise the scale by adding another 5-10 subsectors using the same method to create a full Sector, or focus the scale downwards and get into the interactions between forces and institutions at the planetary level.

A timeline for the Sector/SubSector is also useful for providing a simple overview of the region and its inhabitants.

Bear in mind that the Calixis Sector is fleshed out in basic form in perhaps 10,000-20,000 words in the Dark Heresy Core Rulebook: it's certainly do-able to create a thoroughly engaging setting quite quickly.

Hope that helps! happy.gif

Thanks, some good ideas there. Yes I hadnt planned on going into extreme detail for everything in the Segmentum, mostly a number of sectors and describing a number of planets such as how Imperial Armour lays out their planetary/ystem background. Then id pick a number of planets and do some more in dpeth work.

I am also starting to detail a number of free-roaming 'entities' such as Chaos warbands, bounty hunters, Inquisitors and the like that could potentially turn up on whichever world they want.

I am mildly interested, but I second Lightbringer's opinion that the whole Tempestus is a bit too big.

Just making some sectors and planets would equal to what we already have for DH in every book and then some.

Here is a number of Systems/planets I have started so far:

System Planets

Bastille: Fortress world currently engaged with a forward tendril of a Tyranid hive fleet classified as Hydra.
Cerberus Forge: Twin forge moons that orbit a highly volcanic world. Raw materials are mined and brought back to the forge moons for refinement and production into war materials.
Dellus: Imperial world
Fordian: Disputed Alien territory,Tau/Orks
Gandar: Dark foreboding place (think Degoba system). Home to the Sisters of Lethix (Witches of an extremely potent level and malice)
Haven: Agri world recently settled. Currently under quarantine by order of the Inquisition
The Hylass Moons: Collection of moons orbiting the gas giant Hylass. Mining operations under near constant threat from Ork raids. Several moons currently under Ork control. An Imperial liberation force is currently en-route
Kracian System: Home to Kracian Guard. One rock is used as a weapons testing ground
Lavantaar: 3 Jungle/habitable planets
Onius: Imperial/Ork disputed region
Peresian: Imperial system
Salas: Adeptus Mechanicus held system. Heavily fortified
Serpentine Bastion: A fortress/capitol world that protects the Calysto Foundings; a series of frontier worlds that extend into the Calysto Deep, a recently annexed area of wilderness space
Tarrovun: Civilised world. Five Imperial Guard regiments raised in response to the Hylas occupation.
Vaultus: Highly fortified world Imperial World
Veridian System: Agri-worlds. Whole planets dedicated to farming/processing. Large provider of foodstuffs to neighbouring systems
Vessus System

Calligus
Imperial Hive World. Calligus has a particularly unstable atmosphere which is prone to ionic storms across large areas of its surface. These storms increase in the times when the planets orbit lies between the systems sun and one of its two moons (Gall and Faltun)

I also have a numbe of characters/personalities in the works

This is a map I made which I might potentially change. It will have overlays of different sectors in the Segmentum

Nice, what do you want to do with it exactly? What's your design "skeleton"? How do you want to proceed?

I want to divide the area into a number of subsectors, then make a list of 'important' planets and flesh them out for each subsector. Each subsector will also have personalities/characters/creatures who reside in that area. I am also going to be making a number of 'free-roaming' personalities/characters such as Inquisitors, bounty hunters and the like.

Each planet I want to give a 'documentation' layout

Planetary layout

This is pretty much the same layout as Forgeworld publications.
