Hatchlings in Dragon deck

By Daenarys, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Was playing wit a Targaryen Dragon Deck based on the expansion available.

During the game i was able to bring out a hatchling in shadows which corresponded with a Dragon already in play. I attahed the hachling to the dragon and subsequently searched my deck for two duplicates of the dragon and placed the hatchling as a duplicate dragon as well ( albeit it loses its strengh ). Was this correct ?

thanks

No. That ability should be read as attach all duplicates in play to [dragon]. Cards do not interact with cards that are not in play unless a card specifically says so. Since those other duplicates were in your deck, the hatchling in play doesn't interact with them.

thanks but i need addtional help then.

I thought in play represenets the cards that are actually out and potentially used during challenges. If this were the case then the duplicate would already have been placed in which case i dont understand the benefit of the hatchling.

Please advise

Thanks

Yes in play refers to all cards actually out on the field. This however, doesn't apply to cards that are in your hand, deck, discard, dead, or shadows areas. So once you brought the hatchling out of shadows it immediately attached to the dragon since it was now in play. However, the hatchlings in your deck are not in play yet, so you can't attach them to the dragon.

Ok i think i understand this.

Does the hatchling in effect then become a duplicate dragon ?

Yes. Once it comes out of shadows it immediately becomes a blank, titleless card that attaches to the dragon as a dupe.

There is two other things you need to consider here. The actual text in question here is (for example):

"If you control Viserion, attach White Hatchling and all of its duplicates to Viserion as duplicates."

First, a "duplicate" is a card that has been put on a card in play, allowing you to discard the duplicate in order to save the card it is on. "Duplicate" does not mean "any other copies you may have in your deck." There is a difference between "copy" and "duplicate."

Second, when a card uses its own title in its text, it is considered "self-referential," only applying to itself, not to all copies of the card with the same name.

Where you may be getting confused is that you had Viserion (or whichever) in play first, then brought the White Hatchling (or whichever) out of Shadows. That White Hatchling didn't have any duplicates on it when its text kicked in and made it a duplicate on Viserion. But what if you had had the White Hatchling in play, had put a dupe on it (it is a unique card), and then played Viserion? Obviously, the White Hatchling goes on Viserion as a dupe, but what do you do with the second White Hatchling copy use used to dupe the first? That's when the "...and all of its duplicates..." part of its ability kicks in and means something.

Excellent i think i am there . To hypothesise : i could bring white Hatchling out of shadows as a unique character ( even if Viserion not present ) and then when i get to play Viserion from my hand i then attach the hatchling to in effect give me a duplicate Viserion, if you could just confirm this then i am good to go :)

thanks

That's correct.
