Redirecting a challenge and attacking characters (and stealth)

By Thanos Voidseeker, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

My question concerns Melee games.

1. When redirecting a challenge, does the attacker get to choose new characters to join the challenge? I am uncertain how the challenge phase is structured, to be honest. I think you first declare the challenge, then you choose the participating characters. So in that case, if the defender redirects, you choose another opponent and then choose the participating characters. If that is the case, I suppose the Stealth keyword is easy to resolve.

2. If the above is NOT the case, then after redirecting do you get to choose new characters to affect with Stealth?

Still, I get the feeling my above assumption is correct. Thanks for the help.

Crown Regent: According to the rules, you use Crown Regent to redirect right after the attacking characters are declared. (Note: Announcing the type/opponent for the challenge and declaring the attacking characters are two sides of the same coin. There is never any time for players to do anything between these two things.) At that point, the attacking characters are already determined - and so you cannot go backwards to add or change attacking characters - but you have not gotten to Stealth yet. So the attacking player only assigns Stealth once - against the "new" defending player.

Lord Commander: According to the rules, you use Lord Commander to redirect right after the original defender (does not) declare defending characters. You are long past declaring attacking characters, so you cannot add or change them. However, the FAQ says you actually do go backwards (the only situation in the game where you do move backwards) to the beginning of the "assign Stealth/declare defenders" window, meaning that the attacking player ends up assigning Stealth twice - once against the original defender, once against the Lord Commander.

"Supports": This is not actually redirecting the challenge, but people tend to have similar questions. Like Lord Commander, the rules say the Supporting player may declare defending characters after the original defender (does not) declare defending characters. You are still long past the point of declaring attackers, so you still cannot add or change attacking characters. However, unlike the Lord Commander, there is nothing allowing the attacker to "jump backwards" and reassign Stealth, either. So the attacking player ends up assigning Stealth just once - against the original defender.

My question was about the Crown Regent, as you guessed. Thank you very much for the help.
