Confusion in RtL

By Joffy2, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I have been playing descent for a while now and have most expansions and began to play RtL last night. Though I have some queries that I cant seem to quite understand about the game and dont know if I am misreading the rules or if it just not clearly stated.

1: in the dungeons there are 3 levels. does the layout of the dungeons change between different levels or do they stay the same? similarly, does each level have a leader where as the 3rd level has the Dungeon Master with the same stats as the Dungeon Leader (except for rewards given upon death) or are the first two levels restricted to the minions stated by the dungeon layout being a Master monster and low level monsters?

2: how does a treasure chest work in the dungeons? I cant seem to find any reference as to what treasures to hand out or curses otherthan the heroes rolling said number of power die to discern "additional contents"

3: how far can the heroes move and lieutenants move on the Terinoth Map? By this I mean can they only travel along trails to the first dungeon and then wait until the next week to move further? Eg: Lieutenant wants to go to Dawsmoor and there are 2 dungeons en route, must he spend one week at each dungeon before continuing to next point? Similarly the Heroes have explored a dungeon (A) and have returned to Tamalir. They now want to proceed to the next dungeon (B) which is after (A). Can they proceed to that dungeon directly in that week or must they remain a week at Dungeon (A) before proceeding to (B) - taking into account the encounters.

4: in effect how many Lieutenants are available to each Avatar? I am playing as the sorcerer king and all i can see available to me are 4 in total. And what are the large lieutenant markers for if each lieutenant has a marker?

i appreciate any help in these matters angel.gif

1. When the party moves to the portal of one level, you draw a new dungeon card for the next level. So you will typically reveal 3 different dungeon cards. Each level has the leader listed on the card. The third level leader is just more valuable to kill.

2. The four power dice are it for the chests. No curses come out of chests in RtL. If they roll a die that ends up with a treasure, they receive one of the appropriate color (copper for copper level, silver for silver level, gold for gold level.) Note that they only receive one treasure per die. The heroes will need to discuss who receives it after it is revealed.

3. Typically, they are limited to one trail per week/turn. Certain abilities will increase that, and some abilities allow for one-shot teleportation. In your example, you are correct with the lieutenant. He can get to Dawnsmoor in three weeks. The first week the lieutenant will be at the first dungeon, the second, at the second and the the third at the town. The heroes in your example will take two weeks to get to where they want to go.

4. Most avatars are limited to the three Farrows and one special one for them alone. The Beastman Lord has two. The large lieutenant markers are used for encounters when the party engages the lieutenant (or vice-versa). In this case, the lieutenant is so big they take up more than one space.

Okay, so whatever Lieutenant is involved in an encounter with the heroes they use any one of the 3 large markers? weird that each Lieutenant has not been supplied his own large marker or am I mistaken here?

On the other point thanks so much for the clarification :)

When we resume the campaign tonight I will see how the game progresses and any other further misunderstandings will certainly be posted for clarification. happy.gif

You are mistaken.

Each Lt will use the appropriate marker. A large one if one of the three Lts who are large and have a Large marker, a small one (the same small one as normally used on the mapboard, temporarily not needed on the Mapboard as the Hero party token marks the location) if one of the remaining Lts who are 'normal' sized.

Since the same Token is eminently useable for both Mapboard and encounters for the smaller Lts FFG didn't provide additional tokens.

ah-HA.....thanks for the clarification there happy.gif

Just as an addition, if the Heroes don't find any Treasure they get 1 Conquest for opening the chest.
