My first attempts at Weathering

By Major Mishap, in Dust Tactics

After being encouraged by Loopholes newbie weathering I had to have a go myself as my walkers look pretty naff compared to everybody else's. So after a test run on a light walker the Konig Brothers turned up so I slaped a bit of paint on them...

Wow, that looks really great! Makes me happy to think I encouraged you to produce this. It really looks like a beat-up metal tank.

Looks perfect! The rusted edges and the chipped paint looks very realistic. I like that paintjob!

Looking fantastic! I rarely have seen a group of painters progress as quick as some of the posters on this forum, great job everyone. How about some close ups and a 'how to'? Keep it up.

Great job !, the effect of rust is very well done.

Looking good and very real;)

Looks really amazing! Was that effect created by sponging or did you use another method? Really impressive!

Thanks for the comments, it's taken a year to pluck up the courage to have a go at weathering. All done with a sponge from a blister pack, brushes can't seem to produce the same randomness.

1) Heavily dapple Citadel Codex Grey over vehicle to break up the models grey primer. This colour is almost identical, just a shade different.

2) Paint pistons Citadel Chainmail and armored hydrolic pipes Boltgun Metal.

3) Should add transfers at this point but I forget :)

4) Wash the whole model with Citadel Devlan mud.

5) Next is the weathering where the 'real' walker has lost its top coat to reveal the undercoat. This would be on sharp edges and places or wear and tear such as the grab handles, lifting points and near places of movement. For this I used Coat d'Arms Panzer Grey. I also used the same paint for blast damage and to dab lightly over the surface to dirty it up and break up the large surfaces even more.

6) Next comes the next level of errosion using Citadel Dark Flesh to represent a 'real' walkers metal primer, Red Oxide. This is used sparingly on the edges and lightly dappled over nuts and rivits which are prone to knocks and bumps. If you like you can call it rust :)

7) Need to get some of the powder stuff to muddy them up. I've not bothered before as a) I don't have any and b) I would assume there is little mud on a frozen battlefield.

8) Weather my other dozen walkers.

That's what I call weathering, really nice job!

That is out standing work!!!

Thats a really good first attempt.
