Board differences from 1st/2nd edition

By BanthaFodder, in Talisman

I was wondering if anyone can help me. I am still wavering over sticking with 2nd edition or going for the new version.

One of the problems I have is that I really don't like the 4th edition board. I think it is something about the perspective.

I have seen pictures of it and something shouts in my head "wrong! wrong!" I think the Fields spaces in particular grate with me.

So, maybe I could get the upgrade pack and still use my 1st edition board. (Cheaper too in these credit limited days)

This is where you guys come in:

  • Will the new cards fit on a 1st/2nd edition board or are they totally oversized ?
  • What changes to the board are there? I obviously know about the ones mentioned in the article Location, Location, Location

Chapel, Graveyard, Desert, Village Mystic, Temple

but I am assuming there are only changes from original 4th edition listed. As I stopped at 2nd edition, are there any further changes?

Thanks in advance.

Just to clarify...you mean differences between Black Industries 4th edition and FFG's revised 4th edition, correct?

Actually ignore my post above. However, it's still unclear what comparison you want:

1st vs 2nd edition?

2nd edition vs 4th edition revised?

1st vs 4th edition revised?

All of the above?

I think he means 2nd edition vs 4.5 edition.

I'm not sure on the space changes, but up close, the new board is probably my favorite game board of all time. It really is a work of art. The size is also a factor. The new board is HUGE compared to the much smaller 2nd edition one. It makes the game and the world feel much more epic.

[He's asking about 2nd versus the latest, or4th revisised]

I believe the new 4r cards are slightly wider than those of 2nd... but I'm having to work from memory. Try going to Talismanisland and downloading the backs of some 4r cards to print... that should help you figure out (with some margin for error). From what I remember, there aren't any other changes to the board (obvious ones) and some of the new changes are questionable.

Still, the difference shouldn't be so much that you couldn't just buy a 4r upgrade pack, note the changes for certain spaces by FFG articles, and just play with your 2nd board. Seriously, I would if I still had my 2nd . I agree with your comments about the 4r board... and then some!!! A ridiculous size (established by BI because its cards were wider... though the spaces were still wider than the cards), poor color contrast and scheme making specail spaces hard to spot quickly on sight (except in very bright light) and text hard to read at times (moreso for card backgrounds), etc.

Poor color contrasts? The new board is amazing imo. And the text is EASIER to read if anything because the text is on the blank scroll design thing for each space. Are you playing by candle light or something??

The 2nd Edition board I agree is nice, but 4.5 Edition is much, much nicer.

No, not candlelight, and the contrast is better on the old cards; obviously, come on now. Oh, did I confuse you? For contrast and text, I was speaking mostly about the cards. Board text is reasonable, but... The crinkled paper on the 4r cards was a bad choice. Better to have used a softer, more consistent texture, such as parchment... which is what I will use in the same tone/hue when I begin releasing some expansion cards.

As to light, perhaps you're partially right without knowing it. I have reading glasses, and I was born with hypersensitivity to point where I have worn full UV sunglasses outside all the times of the year. Yes, I have to watch the bright light indoors as well. Cest la vie. But I'm not the only one in my group who has commented on the cards and board.

Artwork might be better on the 4r board, but that's not what I was talking about.... I should have been clearer. Contrast and saturation needed some more work for the board. Would have like to see the artwork POP a bit more... particularly for sitting at one end of that long board.

the size of the adventure card can work on 2Nd board

for the différence :

see on boardgamegeek a picture of the 4ed board et add the difference with the 4.5 in talisman island

if you spaek french i make a summarize :

i think, you can play with the 2nd edition board, with a sheet like mine to remenber what is writen on the board

and if you like it, buy the box !

Thanks everyone for their input. Sorry, been away for a few days.

The question I was asking I think was ultimately recognised as the difference between a 1st or 2nd edition board

(which are pretty much identical apart from 1st edition is proper folding and tougher than the jigsaw style 2nd edition)

and the new 4th revised edition. Basically wondering wether it is practical to use 4+ edition cards on a old-school board.

I think there is a certain amount of nostaglia attached to the decision I am trying to make. We obviously used to play with the original boards and that has a real pull. I have seen pictures of the new board and it just not seem to sit comfortably with me.

I have had another look and I think it is the prespective, it is not consistant, changing from top-down to high-angle and low-angle.

The spaces may be bigger but they have lost something in the process.

The special spaces seem rather puny , for example, the black knight used to dominate the space, spilling over the boundaries.

Now he seems to be a bit of a distant indescript character in the distance.

Just thinking about it, the old board was more a piece of art where the new one is a board with pieces of art on it.

Of course, I have not seen a new board in "real-life" and it may be that it would seem different in reality.

Looks like I had not missed any aother changes in the board. I think the changes are manageable without having to butcher the board which is good.

The crib sheet is very useful, thanks.

It is a shame that the board is not available separately. Otherwise I could get the upgrade pack and possible the board later. Hmm should I stay or should I go....

Alternatively I could try a home-brew. Anyone have any suggestions on how to make your own quad-fold board?

I am guessing that the easiest way is to find one of the required size from a 2nd-hand shop/ebay and glue on top of it.

Cheers.
