2 Champs and a Chump- Episode 46: Sherlockapalooza!

By Kennon, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Join as as we review a Chapter Pack and for those of you that care, let me give a couple warnings.

1. This is an incredibly long episode.

2. At least a third of that is Slops and Props where we discuss our love of all things Sherlock Holmes.

Sherlock Holmes, the movies starring Robert Downey Jr? Sherlock, the awesome BBC series? Or Sherlock Holmes, the whole shebang?

The first two.

Also I am going to say Ride them down shouldn't be bottom 5. heres to hoping Barristans knights being a viable deck in the future.... could be good with Ser Arthur Dayne

I thought that for a while too, but I've tried playing it a few times and I have to agree with them. If it was until the end of phase it would be good, but one power for one card is not a fantastic tradeoff, even if you can get it back.

Yeah, Ride Them Down is never going to change the boardstate for you or help you win a challenge that you weren't already going to win. In a few, very rare circumstance it will change the gamestate by giving you surprise renown so that you can claim power #15, but I just don't think it's an efficient use of a slot in your deck.

On an unrelated note, I think some of the podcasters may be underestimating the power level of Meereen Tourney Grounds. That is easily an auto-include in every Targ deck (not just burn), and probably a 2-3 of in most melee Targ decks. There are actually quite a few playable uniques, but they're just all very low STR... Brown Ben, the hatchlings (3 of them), Viserys, and a host of 2-cost characters (especially when you include neutral characters that are common in Targ builds). As Will (I think) mentioned, burn can pretty much pick off unique characters at will, making the -3 fairly reliable. In non-burn decks, the -3 is admittedly less reliable, but this location still allows you to run influence-lite AND play some burn to trigger the Meereenese Brothel/Killer of the Wounded. (Not to mention, this location is pretty fantastic with the Shadow Parasites.)

Also, I think it's important to note what Meereen Tourney Ground does for Targ in melee. Targ dragons + Heir to the Iron Throne is a pretty strong melee build, with one glaring vulnerability being the Horn of Dragons. Despite Targ's decent number of attachment hate options, it's hard to get attachment hate working reliably in dragon decks, because those decks don't run enough influence/burn to make Meereen Brothel or Dragon Thief very reliable to use when you need them. The new Tourney Grounds sidesteps that problem...you can now run 2-3x Brothel + 3x Forever Burning + 2-3x Tourney Grounds without increasing your influence count. The burn is going to be useful most of the time anyway (especially to use as bargaining chips with opponents), and that means there are now twice as many cards in your deck that trigger the Brothel. Obviously the addition of the Tourney Grounds doesn't eliminate the weakness to Horn of Dragons, but makes the build less risky.

QFT.

I suppose I could see Ride Them Down's uses in melee. I haven't listened to the podcast yet, but yeah, if Mereen Tourney Ground is also bottom 5 I'll definitely be disagreeing with them there.

Don't worry; Will and myself placed it firmly in our top 5. Greg has just gone so long without playing a game that he's loosing his edge lengua.gif

I think that you guys almost touched on why the Melee House attachments are pretty good. It is a target you paint on someone else. If they have the choice between attacking you, or attacking the player they could get some benefit out of, that is one less attack coming your way. If you are going first you are probably going to be able to hammer this person and take the benefit for yourself.

I think this may not be the best card for a melee comp, but for social melee play I think these cards could be pretty useful.

I'll cut you! Seriously, I will!

Agree with everything Twn2dn said... MTG (ugh, maybe I shouldn't abbreviate it that way) is one of the best Targ cards I've seen in a while. I haven't listened to the episode yet, but its reusable burn and its cheap at that! I imagine that top 5 was a really hard choice with this CP, but I'd put MTG in there.

I had three other cards that would have made top 5 before MTG.

Which is why Greg is losing his edge. :P

Before the Martell Inquisition decides to go after The Scourge (once they're done with GG, of course), let's compare it to Lannisport Brothel, instead of drawing comparisons to The Broken Arm from the CCG days gran_risa.gif..... please!

<crosses fingers this doesn't hijack the thread>

Here's an important question. Who is Kennon on the podcasts? Is that Darryl?

~Yeah, Darryl's the guy that's *popular* with listeners! gran_risa.gif

Sick burn! lol

Yowza! Now people can't even tell the difference between me and Darryl?! I'm the only person that's been in every episode! And we usually try to introduce ourselves..... usually.....

Now I'm really confused. I thought Darryl was the "Chump."

So, what does that make Darryl? An auxiliary chump?

Darryl is the drunk guy.

Darryl is the color commentary

Dude, that doesn't count. He is whiter than I am! lol
