Third Elder Sign Fragment

By Schmiegel, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Does anyone understand the exact point of the Exhibit Item "Third Elder Sign Fragment", from the revised edition of the Curse of the Dark Pharaoh?

The wording of the card is as follows.. " Arkham Encounters : After you seal a gate, you may return this card to the box and lose either 1 Stamina or 1 Sanity. If you do, remove 1 doom token from the doom track, flip it over to its elder sign side, and place it on the sealed location."

So the card is played AFTER you have sealed a gate, meaning there is already an elder sign token on the location, due to its being sealed. After having done that, you then use the Third Elder Sign Fragment exhibit item to place an ADDITIONAL elder sign on the location, correct?

If so, what is the effect of that second elder sign, exactly? It would seem that you now have two elder signs, on the same location, to use toward achieving the victory condition of having six elder signs on the board.

Is this true? And also, what happens if a Gate Burst hits a location with two seals (two elder signs) on it? Thanks in advance!

Uh... No one has brought this up before...

I would run it as follows:

You make the roll to close the gate, you spend the clue token necessary to seal it, but by playing this card, you take the token from the doom track instead of taking one of the unused tokens.

So a slightly less powerful version of an Elder Sign...that sounds reasonable. I think you're right. Thanks, Longshot! I sent the question to FFG customer support, but if I don't hear back, your interpretation sounds right on.

I think it means that after spending five clue tokens to seal a gate you may play this card (and take a doom token from the Ancient One's doom track flip it over to its elder sign side and place it on the area). So it works like an elder sign card and the area has only one elder sign token. This is how i understand it works!

The Parchment of the Elder Sign from the original edition of Dark Pharaoh did this:

You may discard this card before attempting to close a gate with a Fight check or Lore check. If you succeed, remove 1 token from the doom track and the gate is sealed.

In other words, it sealed a gate instead of spending clues and it removed a doom token. The tradeoff was that you had to declare the parchment before trying to close the gate, and if you failed the parchment would be lost without effect.

The revised Dark Pharaoh splits this item into three different fragments (I had to take them from my set because there aren't entries on arkhamhorrorwiki for some reason). The intent was probably to spread the original's power out evenly across the three fragments.

First: you automatically pass the closing check.
Second: you seal without spending clues
Third: the seal is taken from a doom token rather than from the supply

So I'd say dragonfly has it right. The text is probably just being redundant. That would mean that the third fragment can't be used with a the Elder Sign unique item.

Edit: added the fragments to the wiki.

Same interpretation also for Julia. The only effect is allowing the investigator to use as seal a doomer from the doom track instead of one from the bank
