Sun Stroke

By rpgdirector, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

We had a question from tonight's playgroup. Sun Stroke is an attachment that says "Attached character cannnot be saved. RESPONSE: After you lose a challenge by 4 or more total STR, until the end of the phase, attached character gets -4 STR and is killed if its STR is 0."

My friend believes that the losing of a challenge refers to the owner of the attachment. I say the character that has the attachment placed on them is who the text refers to. My friend thinks that if he loses a challenge by 4 or more then MY character (who he played Sun Stroke on) has to die. Is this the way it works? Does my character die if my friend loses a challenge?

  1. When reading the word "you" on a card, it always refers to the controller of the card.
  2. Only the controller of the card can trigger the abilities of the card. (So it wouldn't make much sense for a Response that can only be triggered by the controller of the card to have a play restriction using the word "you" that referred to an opponent.)

So taken in context, you always read the card from the point of view of the player who controls it. Since the text on the attachment is not gained by the character, it needs to be read from the point of view of the controller of the attachment.

That means if the controller of the character wins a challenge by 4 or more total STR, his opponent who controls the attachment is probably going to kill his character. The card does have the Martell affiliation, too, so the revenge tactic is really not that surprising.
