[Plot Seeds] Post your scenario ideas.

By Mark It Zero, in Dark Heresy Gamemasters

I always love threads like this on other forums as a way to see what ideas other people are toying with as well as broaden your idea of what would make a great DH adventure. As is customary I will start us off:

Time Trial

One of the Inquisitor's trusted servants has gotten himself in hot water on an imperial world. The acolytes are tasked with proving his innocence in the matter. A local servant girl has accused the man of violently assaulting her after she spurned his advances. Appalled at the attempted destruction of his property, the girl's employer has pulled strings to ensure the trial falls during the Festival of the Emperor's Ascension (IHB pg. 197) when it is believed that no false judgement may be passed. This world in particular takes that particular belief very seriously.

The players have a mere 72 hours to prove their comrade is innocent, during which time they will likely run afoul of something much more sinister. It turns out the accused was undercover investigating a Cult of Slaanesh when he was arrested and charged with the crime. To make matters even more intriguing, one night the prisoner is visited by a mysterious hooded figure. Upon further investigation the players may discover that this mystery figure is in fact the very girl who has laid such accusations at the feet of their ally.

Cleanse and Purify

A mining facility orbiting a gas giant hasn't made contact with the outlaying systems in some time. A ship carrying several platoons of elite imperial guardsmen have been sent to investigate, to never be heard from again. The inquisition is unable to send a complete force to find out what happened, so they settle on sending the acolytes. Upon finding the station they find the place is still functional, but after making dock is deathy quiet. They needent explore too far to find a survivor, terrified out of his skull. According to him, the dead have come back to life, and are killing the living, just for the freshly killed living to come back to life as well. These servants of the decayed one are a shambling hoard, and what is guiding their actions is unknown. They have cut communications for the entire station, and some unknown force has trapped the acolytes. The acolytes must navigate their way through the warp-zombie infested station and find a way to re-open the hanger so that they may escape from this hellhole, and send word to the imperial navy to blast this station out of existance. Should they fail, they will join the hoard of the zombie damned.

My GM loves taking movies and making them 40kish.

So far our groups favorite was Rocky Horror. A techno-chaos-Xeno has infiltrated the Imperium as a Noble and his cadre start messing with the dead and the living trying to create the perfect man for his worship of Slaneesh. The players (us) show up on the world, and are then totally cut off from the rest of the Imperium due to a (shortlived) chaos storm, and the fun ensues, especially when the Noble's daemonspawn shows up who the Noble thought was already dead riding a hoverbike.

The Santificat- a heavily warded prison, suspended in an artificial lake of caustic, paralytic fluid. Inside- the worst psychic and xenophile prisoners that Inquisition has reason not to execute... yet. There are rumours that there are even controlled-environment habitats inside with alien prisoners, held pending vivisection/interrogation.

Your Inquisitor has tasked you to extricate one particular prisoner from there, without leaving a trail that ill point back to him (the exact reason why should vary from group to group, but an example might be: "I don't trust Inquisitor Bonjuv (the man in charge); there are certain unsavoury rumours about him, and some prisoners sent there simply 'disappear'. I have need of the knowledge prisoner LDCIX has locked in his brain, and I doubt I'll get it through channels"

Quite aside from the challenge of breaking in and snatching someone from on of the most secure prisons in the sector, all a scenario based around this needs is for something to go wrong- maybe their getaway sub is holed, maybe a mass breakout, and the rest should write itself...

I might actually use that Alasseo! That was a nifty idea!

='|'= The Academy ='|'=

The acolytes are sent for an University of Tutoris Extremis, on a remote planet, with nothing else on it, but a barren wasteland and . Here several agents of the throne are training in different diciplines. There are a lot of Acolytes, but its not the only ones training here. They will meet a team under their own Inquisitor and they will meet another, that they will soon come to compete with.

This adventure is best played in scenes, among others:

* Creed Ceremon , in the Grand Cathedral, (when I ran this, we used placing on the benches to determine religiousity, and also some players found out, that you can't be a non-believer, which they for some reason didn't understand from the beginning(she then changed her character to see the emperor as the father figure, never in her life... perfect!)

*Common dinner in the Great Dining Hall (think Hogwarts) which is held every sunday at 8, were the most important stand first in line, and the less important last. After all have entered and stand behind the, the Lord Rector and the lesser rectors enter at the High Table, all are seated and a evening of socialising, networking and scheming begins. (dunno if "common" is the right word, but its the only time of the week all dine together, otherwise its used more like a cafeteria)

*Several of the people there have a silver ring with an Eagle Head, not an aquila, but a single head with an open beak, seen from the front. These people are members of the Soaring Eagle Society - a secret society for elite students. You must get some of the best scores of the university, in your field... then you will be aproached by the society, and will be given one task of initiation. (steal the Lord Rectors dog, Kill another student, talk to the Eldar in the basement, talk the name of a loved one out of a fellow student)

* The Annex is a training hall for Psykers, a place with dimmed windows, and unspeakable activities

* The cellar under the university is a dungeon and menagerie - here are convicted fellons that can fight for freedom and redemtion, if they play the momentum forces in live rounds excercises, and gruesome Xenos, non-sentinent or otherwise. Get ready for corruption and insanity points, if you go down there.

* Training have the players run narrative scenes, of trainings, have them be good at somethings, and have them be bad at others. Also use this to give more in deth universe knowledge, and pure brainless action. (we are having Interrogation Techniques as a subject, where I actually teach the players a little about it. And we have "entry by vehicle" - they get a Rhino, 6 Guardsmen and a ruin, and they plan how to ram and secure the building in seconds)

='|'= Nothing as Quiet as Snow ='|'=

The Acolytes are sent to investigate some murders, of young people, at a little agri-station, on a big agri-world, just after the harvest. The murders are quite bestial, and corruption is feared, why the Inquisition is on the case, and not the Arbites. It would seem, that the killed ones are strong willed individuals. Winter has come, and snow starts falling. As the acolytes ask around the small village-like station, a certain pattern becomes apparent: The villagers are terse and stoic, they talk little - this is not anything unusual, but when asked about daily subjects they do talk, but as soon as the questions become investigative, they all answer the exact same, such as "Yes, that Thompson was always a ***** fellow" - the EXACT same, or murders and the bestiality it it self "hehe, I would no nothing about that" the exact same, in a slightly distant way. At some point the Acolytes will realise that all the villagers are mindcontrolled by the same entity, and as soon as the realise, the entity want them dead. Mind controlled villagers will start coming after them, and it becomes a horrific race to survive - when they arrive at their Lighter, the crew is dead, and the engine ripped apart - Either make a stand till you can get it working, or find the Xenos that controls them. (Edit: hmm quite similar to Ira's plot actually)

Even Forge Worlders that don't follow the Emperor?

What can I say? I've been rewatching both Aeon Flux (the MTV shorts, not the movie with Charlize Theron) and Space Precinct.

I've been playing around with another idea to spring on my group once they finish Rejoice For You Are True!: a series of odd incidents on Cyrus Vulpa- the party are being sent to investigate a series of grox mutilations; pretty standard one might think, but those grox who have been mutilated heal abnormally fast, and seem to be getting more aggressive...

Eventually, the mutilations are not restricted to the lobo-grox, but spread to the laser-grox, or to a grox which has been crippled in some way- lost body parts are regrown; a laser-grox' ballistic mechadendrite is expelled from its' body. This should prompt the players to have one of the other mutilated grox autopsied, if they hadn't already done so- they will find out that the supposedly lobotomised grox aren't, although they can check the records and interview sufficient people to find out that they were.

Something is causing tissue regrowth, and it starts by leaving a characteristic wound pattern. Is it a bizarre alien probe, 'fixing' all the damage? A secret AM experiment into banned nanotech? Some warp entity working to its' own inscrutable design? Or something even more sinister? It is up to individual GMs, but I recommend that their players hurry, before the first human shows up with that particular wound pattern...

I guess they are sort of "tolerated" more than "accepted", right?

I do not deem myself a master of the setting...

The Tech Priest in the group decided to sit in the very back... half the church was filled, and one of the character that are a believer by name, more than by heart sat at the last filled bench...
