Starships

By signoftheserpent, in Dark Heresy

I suppose it's down to GM fiat, but i don't want to give the players access to too much. But what is the precedent for Inquisitors and starships; do they own their own? What sort/size?

I have never heard of an Inquisitor actually owning their own starship. If, I would assume the smallest known scout ship (the one mentioned in "Church of the Damned") and even the this would be rare among Inquisitors.

Suggestion: do not give a player group command of a starship. They can have arrangements with one or more ship captains but this does not mean they can command one.

If the purpose justifies the means, the they can "borrow" one from the Imperial Navy, so. Woe to the Imperium if things escalate to such a scale...(see: Meritech-Wars)

what about shuttles? Eisenhorn has a smaller craft, a gun cutter.

There's certainly no reason why an Inquisitor couldn't own their own ship (without being a Rogue Trader, since someone will bring that up). It just won't be typical, since a starship is an extremely big operation in and of itself.

More often than not, if an Inquisitor needs a ship, they'll commandeer one, or use one of the Black Ships (which are kinda owned by the entire Inquisition, or something.. it's never really laid out).

I think its very rare that inquisitors own a ship. It happens but its not very reasonable for the most of them.

First, a ship needs huge amounts of ressources which an inquisitor would prefer to invest in other fields like his networks of agents, secret holdings, information etc.

Second: he could get a bad relation to the organisation he acquired the ship from. At least these gigantic ships have to come frome someone who is now missing it. They could therefore inform other allied inquisitors which could take action against a collegue who is to acquisitive without good reason.

Third, and from my view the most important argument againt a ship is that they are quite easy to identify. As soon as a certain ship is assosiated with an inquisitor it becomes impossible for him to act in secrecy. As soon as it enterers orbit the whole population knows who is here and every cult or heretic would be alearted and start to cease operation and cover their tracks or just flee before he even sets foot on the world.

Famous Guncutters or simliar craft are ok from my point of view. They are quite common and allow to move without uncovering the identity of the owner. They are also very usefull for the player characters to act as mobile bases. There are also rules for combat and flying and stats for such vehicles in RT.

A guncutter sounds reasonable.

I have a player with a voidborn character with some pilot skills. It might be good to have him use them.

The vehicle isn't intended so that the acolytes can take over the universe, but that they can do stuff in space. Otherwise he's going to have some redundant abilities. We don't even need to have space combat either.
