Support of the Throne - Promissory Note.

By Darknexxus, in Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition

Hi All,

In a game that had ben going on for a month or so, we finally flipped over the game over card, which states the person with the highest victory points wins.

Kevin had the highest of 5 points, then next person Owen had 4.

However, Owen also had 2 "Support of the Throne" Promissory Notes which state the person needs 1 less (each) victory point to win the game.

So the question of who won came up with supporters of both sides of the arguement. Kevin had 5 points and so Owen would have won if he had 6, but per the cards, he needed 2 less to win, so did he only need 4?

Did Kevin or Owen win the game?

I would have to say Kevin won this game. The game over card doesn't care about who needs the fewest poins to win, it simply measures who has the most points. The promissory notes don't actually provide points, so they don't help in this case.

Correct. Assuming you were playing to a 10 point game, the game could be won in any of 3 ways (that I can think of)

1. Someone reached 10 victory points

2. The game over card was pulled

3. Someone fulfilled an "Instant win" objective like supremacy.

The promisory notes only affect condition 1. Your friend would only have required 8 points to win, had he reached that point before the game over card is pulled. Since however, that was not the case, you default to the text on the card: "The player with the most victory points wins". Since the promisory note card is specifically worded as "You need one less point to win" rather than "This card is worth one point" that means it only pertains to condition 1, where a specific number is needed.
