Hey All!

By SuperAxisSanta, in Dust Tactics

Hey I just wanted to introduce myself to the rest of the Dust Tactics community and you know just say I'm happy to be aboard. Just got the revised core set and I must say it is quite nice. Any thoughts about what I should get next (for both factions of course)?

Welcome aboard, I'm glad to see another new face. As for what to get next I would say Command squads, Medium Walkers and then Spec. Ops. As for expansion I would say look at the included heroes and go by which ones look most useful other wise Cyclone has a sub/landing craft tiles, Seelowe has building tiles and Cerberus has the 3d Building. also here is some other squads and heroes that tend to make a big difference; Allies: OZZ 117, Grim Reapers, Axis: Recon Grenadiers, Heavy Recon Grenadiers, Manfred. The Light Walkers are good but are of limited use IMO. If you have any questions just ask.

I have lots of questions.

1.What is IMO?

2.Why Spec Ops? I mean they probably die quickly.

3.Opinion on Heavy walkers are they worth the space(quite literally).

Those are the biggest at the moment.

PS Thanks for quick response!

Oh and one more thing somone suggested to just get the original core set. Is this a good idea? And do GW paints work on DT models?

1. IMO is an abbreviation In My Opinion.

2. They observers just need line of sight to send an artillery strike anywhere so you can have your artillery in 2 places at once with them. Sniper can take out a squads special weapon before it get close enough to do any real damage, ie. a BBQ squad is a bit less threatening when without a flame thrower.

3. If you want one go for it, there really cool and look great; but for the purpose of playing the game I would say be able to field at least 300 points before going for the heavy walkers, most smaller point maps will have trouble accommodating them and a slugfest between 2 heavy walker is likely all that would happening. I can currently field about 1100 points and have only used the heavy walker in 600+ point games.

And the Original core set is worth it if you can find it for its original price. GW paints should work as should any other acrylic based paint.

OK thank you very much:)

GW paints should be fine, but not all acrylics are created equal. The ones I'm using, generic craft acrylics, mainly Americana brand, won't bond well to models. Not a big deal, you can either prime with a model acrylic or do a couple of layers with thin coats to prime. Once you finish painting the mini (or all but the fine detail) you can then clear coat it for protection. Otherwise, you run the risk of it chipping off the model when you drop it. Not something I've experienced, but the nice lady at the manufacturer warned me of it.

Sniper & Observer squads (the Spec Ops box) are useful as fillers as well as their primary functions. One of the guys at the top table at the last Gencon was using a pair of artillery walkers with several spotter squads letting him call down fire on everyone.

That was me. Were you there Algesan, and did we get the chance to face-off?

We should sticky a topic titled, "I just bought the core set. What should I get next?" happy.gif

I keep having to take a mental step back every time I see "IMO", as that is Japanese for "Potato". I'm thinking, "Potato? Why are they bringing that up?" happy.gif

Yeah, talk about a Frequently Asked Question!

I think the forum header should read: "Welcome to the Dust Tactics Discussion Forum, now go buy some Command Squads."

In fact we need a in game admin that will make some cleaning. A topic for what's next, for best non winter camo, for painting techniques, rules clarification, maybe some pools about the expansions;)

No, I just read all of the reports and your comments in the News thread on it. I actually haven't played much with artillery yet because my opponents have all been learning the game, which means direct fire only.

OTOH, I have noticed that having more "activations" than your opponent gives you a big tactical advantage in DT (which is why I was willing and somewhat eager to see how the originally pitched concept of DW would play out, now, not so much). So having several cheap observer squads in your list (even without artillery) can be useful. Yes, they get blown away fairly easily, but if you can use that to set up and blow away some of your opponent's squads/walkers, then you can maintain that advantage. Heh, I remember someone pointing out that they were afraid tournament games would end up being swarms of Observers with a few Snipers to screen some walkers and maybe heavier squads.
