"Until the End of Phase"

By player1768538, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

There's a pile of cards that say "(does X effect) until the end of the phase".

If you're in a challenge and you play one of these effects, will it apply until the end of that particular challenge or until the entire Challenge Phase is finished?

I presume it's until the entire phase is finished but I have a doubt. Seems like Targaryen burn is a much more tactical melee weapon if that's the case.

Thanks!

WHOLE

Compare to cards like Longship Iron Victory or Frozen Outpost , which say the bonus is only gained until the end of the challenge.

Phase means phase. There are only 7 of them. Even in things like Marshaling and Challenges, where players take turns actively doing stuff, there is only the one total phase for all players turns,

Why would you doubt that "until the end of the phase" means "until the end of the WHOLE phase" for challenges? Is it simply how huge Targ's STR reducers can be over the course of the phase that makes it seem like there should be an out, or is there something else making it seem like each challenge should count as a separate phase?

I suppose it's a carry-over from games like Vs System where boosts & effects are generally for that particular fight. My doubt here was whether everyone's challenge phase was a seperate phase and once you passed to the next player to declare his/her challenges the effects from your "phase" of challenges would end.

Thanks for clearing that up for me.

It is something that people coming from other games are confused by, sometimes. Especially for Marshaling and Challenges. So you're in good company. Taking turns within a single phase - as opposed to each player having a separate turn with their own phases - is a major mechanical difference in AGoT compared to other popular customizable card games. Just remember that there is no "your Challenge phase," but rather "your turn in the Challenge phase," and you'll be fine.
