Hello all! I am a MoM newbie, and this is also my first post to the forum. I really love the game, but I've got a few questions for shoring up weak points. My #1 gaming buddy is my wife, so I play most as a 2 player game. We have been doing Keeper and only 1 investigator. This leads to 3 effects that sort of dampen the otherwise awesome game:
1) The Keeper is anemic, getting only 1 threat per turn. 3/4 turns are spent collecting threat and dropping a time counter Usually there is an event card clipped before the keeper can do anything. It seems ill advised to ever play a Mythos because you really have to save threat for playing major actions to win the game. Mythos go unused.
2) The investigator (lone investigator) has a difficult time affecting a win (rather than just being given a win) because it takes too long to navigate the board and uncover clues. For most scenarios thus far, the investigator must have almost perfect play in order to find the clues ahead of the event cards. This takes away from the desire to explore or otherwise play around with the game.
3) The event cards rule the game. I know the point is to build tension and suspense, and we're not supposed to be dallying around in the MoM, but it is slow going for the keeper (no threat) and the investigator, so the event cards usually wind up dictating too much of the game. Quite often it is a draw, or someone is "given" the win because time runs out.
I know the keeper has a lot of advantages anyway, but 1 threat per turn really slows things down. It wouldn't matter if the keeper could sit back for some turns and collect a lot of threat, but by then you've uncovered one or two event cards. In a scenario like The Fall of the House of Lynch, I think the keeper would have to play perfect moves (and have a dense investigator) to get the Shoggoth summoned and to the foyer in time.
Not complaining, just want to improve my play of this beautiful board game. How much luck have people had have 1 player use 2 investigators? Would 2 threat for 1 investigator be too much? Other tips? Thanks!
