Historical military/warrior archetypes as yet unused by GW

By Lightbringer, in Deathwatch

Surely the Orks have the Celts covered, even down to covering themselves with blue paint?

I really don't think that the Orks have much of the Celtic feel to them. There is only the WAAAGH!

Orks don't get much of anything anymore sadly. I remember when the Clans looked different.

No it's actually Eldar that officially have the celtic thing down, Eldar. In Fantasy it's Wood Elves that are mostly Celtic so more specifically they'd be closer to to the rarely seen Exodites I suppose.

Wouldn't be the first time that a single culture has been the inspiration for several things though.

How about the various cultures of the South Pacific?

The Maori were, (and still are,) some seriously hard dudes. And you've got other islander cultures like the Tongans, Samoans, Fijians and heaps of others. They all come from pretty hardcore warrior cultures and they all have some pretty cool artwork. (Tribal tattoos anyone?)

Plus there's the types of lands they come from. Islands and volcanos make a different landscape than that presented in the regular GW outlook of the world. (Not surprising as they're from Europe.)

I was working on a chapter that was an Islander based chapter on a largely ocean based world. Plenty of oportunities for tribal warfare and various sea monsters to make it a deathworld, even though it's got a beautiful climate and plenty of sun and stunning beaches.

Agreed - hence the Scions of Fuschal I've put together for an upcoming campaign - picture chainswords with actual shark teeth as relic weapons, etc :)

You know how they make Maori space marines? They give Maori's power armour. Job done!

Those are some scary bastards.

That they are :) And by the time Captain Cook showed up, their tribal warfare was taking some bizarre turns - turning it an almost formalized sport, complete with convoluted rules, specific game plays ( each with its own name ) and ritual banter after the match when one side or the other surrendered. Plenty of one-on-one combat during the breaks, too.

Related note (obviously a historical that IS being piliaged) how greek are these guys?

I love them both, Moloc is just amazing and very Greek. They did a good job of Ivanus mixing the greek look with the standard Chaplin skull look is really well done, have his helmet look like Greek Helmet over a skull is inspired.

Those guys looks wonderful. Its great to see the Classical/Hellenistic Greeks are getting some love at least in terms of 40k Chapters. :)

A canon chapter that is, at least visually, inspired by samurais are the Emperor's Shadows http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Emperor's_Shadows

Catachans=US Vietnam war soldier

I would say that Catachans are just as inspired by 'Dutch' Schaeffer's team in Predator (if not more) as they are by US Vietnam war Soldier.

Some Historical military/warrior archetypes I would like to see used as chapters/IG inspiration are:

Caroleans

Late Kievan Rus' forces, preferably fully based the ones seen in Alexander Nevsky (1938)

Ashigaru

Apaches

Oprichnina (would be very fitting for a Dark Angel successor chapter)

Musketeers of the military household of the King of France

Streltsy

Askari

Robin Hood and his Merry Men

IG allows more flexibility for this. Astartes are mostly restricted to a few jobs that they must perform anywhere mostly with the same equipment, while IG regiments can be specialised for any specific local conditions/tasks, use crazy variety of equipment and draw on wider range of traditions.
