Asylum Packs: Where to start

By player1431982, in CoC General Discussion

I got the Call of Cthulhu LCG for christmas and am really excited to expand the card pool. My question with all these expansion options is where to go? The core set cards are just so good that I'm getting at least one more copy of it, but I need some advice on the Asylum Packs.

Should I start at Summons of the deep and collect the packs in order (Skipping Dreamlands till a 60 card reprint), or should I start with the Forgotten Lore packs (At the mountains of madness, ancient horrors, etc.) and go from there? When do you think I should pick up Secrets of Arkham and Order of the Silver Twilight?

The AP cycle sticky is really helpful but since it's currently incomplete I'd like some community input gran_risa.gif

Well, if you become infatuated with the game (as I did), you will eventually buy all the packs. So I figure it probably doesn't matter where you start!

Personally, I always recommend Secrets of Arkham as the first expansion after the Core set, there are a lot of good cards in there and you get more cards per dollar than in the asylum packs.

Do you like the Silver Twilight faction, or would you rather round out the other factions a bit more first? If you like them, it's a good deal. If you'd rather round out the older factions first then hold off on the Silver Twilight box and probably the Rituals cycle which have a greater percentage of Silver Twilight cards.

In general though, I'd start with Secrets of Arkham and probably the Yuggoth Contract cycle, then Summons of the Deep or Ancient Relics. Somewhere around there, pick up Silver Twilight (unless of course you really like that faction) and work on the Rituals cycle.

Now, it's also possible that you'll really like one faction the most, in which case you may lean more towards picking up individual packs to get specific cards you want for them. I kind of started out that way, I was building a Dark Young themed deck for Gencon and bought only the packs I needed to get the Dark Young characters I wanted. Then I started filling in the gaps, but with an emphasis on Deep One characters for another deck I wanted to do. Like TheProfessor said you'll probably end up with most/all of them eventually anyway, but unlike him I do think the order matters if you're doing it over a length of time. Get the packs that please you most at the time :)

The counter-argument is that cycles tend to have a theme so others like buying them together. For instance, Dreamlands has a lot of Night/Day cards. Ancient Relics has of course a lot of Relic cards and things dealing with them. More loosely, the last two cycles have had plenty of Lunatics, another new mechanic that's been added to the game. The great thing about it being an LCG though is that you always know exactly what you'll get in a pack and you can research the pack contents ahead of time to see if you like what that pack offers.

Thanks for the advice! I am just looking to generally expand the card pool, although deep ones have been crushing in the games we've played so far. I'll probably go with Secrets of Arkham and Summons of the Deep!
