Just curious if those beginners who are new to the card game are planning on buiying 3 copies of the base set to get a playset of each card, or are you hoping to trade amung your friends to get just the cards you need? Anyone else kind of wish they had a "just the cards" expansion?

if you check the upcoming league there is no reason to own more than one copy. maybe later leagues will change that, i dont know. but right now its a waste of money to own more than 1 copy.

So far I don't feel I'll need more than a single copy of the core set or any of the asylum packs. It really depends on your 'gaming environment', though.

If you're new to the game and plan to mainly play against other new players (or just casually) you should be fine. Even the league has been set up to require only single copies.

Only if you plan to play tournament style or mainly against competitive players will you need three copies of everything (probably including the old black-bordered cards).

If you only plan to play in the upcoming League, then the above comments are correct.

If you want to play at the topmost competative level (no official rules yet), then you might want three sets. But no hurry on that. Go meet some new players at the league in March and see how they want to play.

Seems to me that you lose a lot of the deck building pleasure with only one set. I picked up 3 core sets, and have picked up three of each asylum pack.

I'm only going to be playing as a casual player with some friends and we've already agreed that each of us will only buy one of each Asylum Pack and one Core Set.
