Is stealth a triggered ability?

By Yusaku, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

ok, i am bit confused.

I think somewhere i read that as with renown and deadly it isn't... but in the faq it says:

(3.6) Triggered Effects
Any effect that a player chooses to execute is considered a "triggered effect." Thus any effect that begins with a "Phase:" or "Response:" is a triggered effect. Also note that playing an event card is thus considered a triggered effect. A "triggered ability" is a triggered effect printed on a card already in play.

At stealth the attacking character chooses to activate it... so can someone please clarify this to me?

Thank you! :)

Actually, you must always declare stealth. You can declare stealth on no characters, but you can't not declare stealth at all. It isn't a triggered ability.

Triggered abilities are in Bold Face . They usually have prepatory phrases to let you know how to use it or when to use it. Some examples:

Any phase:
Response:
Plot:
Mashalling:
Challenges:
Dominance:

Once you see that prep, you know that whaever follows is an OPTIONAL effect that gets triggered by a player, as long as the trigerring follows the rules of the text of the card. Ala, you can't trigger something in a phase other than what it says its supposed to be used in. And remember, you don't have to do it.

Stealth is part of a group of words that are always at the top of the text box, after the traits line. These words are called keywords. They get used whether you want to or not. You can chose to use it toward/on/for nothing, but it is still getting used.

The text that says X will happen when this card, comes into play, or leaves play, or attacks, or does whatever - has to go off. It isn't an option, its part of the card's purpose in the game and was designed to behave that way during gameplay. You can only stop it by doing something to the card that causes its text to be blanked. Some attachments, events, locations, plots, and other cards have the ability to blank text boxes.

Keep in mind, also, that keywords are not considered "abilities," triggered or otherwise, by definition.

Other than that, what has been said is actually a very important distinction in the game. Do not confuse the ability to choose a target (even when "no target" is a choice) for an effect with choosing to initiate the effect in the first place. That's what is happening with Stealth. You are choosing the target, but you must make a choice - even if that choice is "no one" - because the effect itself initiates whether you want it to or not.

thank you very much for the clarifications. i had all messed up in my mind as it seems.
