At last ! So a few questions...

By Lska2, in Dust Tactics

Ok, so as prolly most of you guys know i've been hunting for the DT old Core Set for few weeks now and finnaly i got my hands on it today as a christmas gift;) I now have a few questions to ask, but first the story if you are intrested, if not just skip ahead for some newbie questions:D

All started when i was looking for some x-mass gift for myself (my parents have problems with ideas for me;) ) i got intrested in DT, found the forums and all the great stuff that we have for the game, so i got sucked in. Then i started looking for old core set, tried buing in USA and other countries but after some adventures with strange ppl on BGG Market and too high cost of sending stuff ( for a normal person in Poland:P) i gave that idea away.

Christmas was closing in so i gotten more and more desperate. I found a list of almost all board game shops in poland and started calling. After about 30 calls some guy said : "Yeach i got one of those old's i can sell it to you for 83 dollars. Ofc i agreed and was patiently waiting for the package to arrive at my doorstep. Unfortunately my home border guard (also called MOM) seized the package while i was at university! So i came back home, all excited that i will finally see my DT and heard: "Not until you find it under christmas tree" ARGHHHH....

So today ! Finally! I took the niecly wraped box and opend it! Imagine my face when i saw the words: Premium Edition on the edge of the coffin box. Ofc i wanted to paint the stuff mysalef, but hell i got the deluxe edition in price of a normal core set (at least i think so) :P Call me lucky and dare to fight ! :D

Ok now, enough of my graphomania i'm hoping for some feedback on this;)

1. Are the premium edition figures somehow protected from scraching paint? I mean there are some sort of special washes that don't allow the paintjob to be wiped out by touching soldiers and walkers during the games, schould i get sth like that ? :D

2. Is there a safe and sound way to (now someone will surely want to kill me) change the paint on some of the figures ? I just do noit like the winter camo and i'm thinking about painting on some of the painted parts. OK it;s a heresy but i'm just thinking!

3.How the bending with a hair dryer works on painted figures? Will it destroy some of the paint?

4. Now i got the Tank Busters, Gorillas, Op. Sea Love and the core set. What schould be my next aim in buing infantry to target the scenarios form SeaLove?

Hope you guys will find at least such amazing gifts under your tree ;)

You are way to lucky!!

1. Never had a problem with mine and I play with them all the time.

2. I don't know you and with all due respect, YOU ARE CRAZY!!! LOL No idea.

3. No idea, hopefully someone else can help you with this, but I never found the need to do this.

4. COMMAND SQUADS. Love them and hate them! Love that I can bring eliminated units back and reactivate units. Hate them because I usually spend the entire game trying to roll a hit to use one of the abilities.

Well have a good holiday guy, sounds like you are so far....

Well, I can honestly say I hate you! I have a local store in Denver CO that still has 2 or 3 of the old Core sets... but you are VERY lucky. I will send you an unpainted one if you want to mail me the premium set... gran_risa.gif

Don't have Premiums, so can't answer the first 3. But as to...

4) Indeed, Command Squads. Beyond that, get some SpecOps and artillery walkers.

OK guys, i looked at those boys in the daylight, i won't even touch those printed minis:D They will stand there and hail my glory:P

As for the units, L Master isn't that a bulit for operation cerberus? Which i had to skip beacouse of no medium walkers and comand squads in my local stores;) Schouldn't i aim for light walkers or hvy inf?

TFU! Operation Cyclone!OFC!

Hey guys, I'm new to Dust, so I'm gonna piggy back on this thread to save space. I just got my Original Core Set today ($80 what!), and I'm really impressed. I've got paints on the way (I'll be over in the painting forum), and hoping to have a couple battles this weekend. A few questions/comments/rambles:

What expansions should I go for next? I know the Revised Set is a great deal, but I'm liking the idea of some Command Squads, Light Walkers, and of course, Snipers (combined with Cerberus buildings is guaranteed to get friends participating).

I'm really looking forward to Dust Warfare.

I've played and enjoy (and have lots of) Axis and Allies Minis, and I really dig 4E DnD combat, so I'll like this alot right? My group should be able to pick it up real quick right?

Any houserules/fixes to consider when we get the hang of it?

I'm located in piedmont NC (whatup gorfrag!)

Anyway, I'm here lurking constantly, waiting til I can get my next new shiny plasti-crack fix.

Mattador Actual out.

Welcome to the game! I think you have the right idea as to what units to buy next. I'd only consider perhaps getting the medium walker expansions before going for the light walkers, so you can get the artillery units in first. Other than that, yeah, definitely Command Squads and Snipers.

As for house rules, the only one my group uses is that when a walker is destroyed, it leaves behind a bit of wreckage that functions the same as an ammo crate.

Yep, the Sniper/Observer box is a great deal, especially for rounding out lists. Even if you don't use the Observers for observing, they are extra activations and screening units, which depending on the scenario can be used to force your opponent to commit (or stagnate) before your big guns wheel out or your close combat squads charge in.

And you ALWAYS end up with half a dozen AP left on your army list that are only good for getting the Observers in. I really wish they would release some different units that were this cheap, so that I'd have more options for rounding up an army list.

I think it's time to start thinkig about making your own armor 1 inf;) Couse it doesn't look like FFG will give us some any time soon;)

I would think armor 1 would be reserved for non combatant objectives ie. rescue the v.i.p.s. where you have to get a non-combat unit to a location to win, but to each his own.

I see it more as normal cannon fodder. Normal inf units, not special forces. We need to remember that units we comand in DT are somewhat special, so maybe 10 men squads made of army men? :D

Having 10 man units will defeat the objective of having cheap filler units and you will have great difficulty in placing them in a square especially if it contains terrain. Here's my A1 troops which have proven to work well, they probably need updating in the light of new rules and points system.

Very nice looking ;) Those would bring the needed T1 inf into battles:D

It's just that we don't see FFG trying to produce models for "regular" troops, even though by the fluff the majority of the troops out there are still just wearing uniforms & steel helmets (Infantry A1) and given the realities of industrial production, most armored units are still fielding WW2 tanks. A battle in the streets with T-34s & Russians vs Axis supertroopers & Loth walkers could be a lot of fun to stage, but alas, FFG won't be doing anything about it.
