Hey I have Orphan of the Greenblood and we had a rule disagreement with it.

The card is an Any Phase card. It has your discard the card to choose a character. Until the end of the phase that character loses all its icons.

My friend played the card during a challenge after I had committed my characters. My friend felt that the character could no longer be in the challenge. I felt the character could be in the challenge because I had already committed it to the challenge.

Any clerifications?

Because the FAQ can explain it better than I can:

If my character loses a military icon in
the middle of a military challenge, is that
character removed from the challenge?

No. Once a character is in a challenge, it can
only be removed from that challenge by an
effect that specifically removes the character
from a challenge, an effect that removes
the character from play, or by an effect that
changes control of that character. Gaining or
losing icons mid-challenge does not affect the
attacking or defending status of that character.

The one thing to add is this: The only time the game specifically looks at whether a characters does or does not have a particular challenge icon is when that character is declared as an attacker or defender. Continued participating, counting STR to resolve the challenge, etc., do not actually have anything to do with the icons - just the act of declaring as an attacker or defender.

if a char has no m icon, Orphan also let him -1 m icon until the end of phase, right?

A character can never have fewer than 0 effective icons. So if the character has no MIL icon, the Orphan will put the "-1 MIL icon" condition on him, but the game will consider the result of the icon count to be 0. If you need to check for the icon again, you start from scratch, and include all applicable modifiers including the "-1 MIL icon" from the Orphan, but the character can never be thought of as having "-1 MIL icon" as the result of the check.
