I just grabbed a copy of CoC LCG last weekend and I'm still very new to the game. When characters are put into play can they immediately be committed to stories during the story phase?

as I understand it, yes. Except the first player can't commit to stories on the first turn.

I couldn't find it anywhere in the rule book which states that they can't and also thanks for pointing out that first turn players have to skip their entire story phase. (under page 8 important exception) took me a while to find that

So - all your characters have haste.

(unless mention otherwise - like watcher of the woods for example)
