Trish the Spy Errata?

By Tromdial, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Does the spy's Focus need to be Errata'd? It says she gets a focus of 1 but her Abnormal Focus says she gets none. My one friend debated she gets the 1 because it is printed on the card but rather I believe it's a typo that should instead say "N/A" or "Read Abnormal Focus ". If she could choose between the two, then her stats would max out in a half-hour of play and stay there. There would be no point to use her second ability either to damage her self for sliding purposes.

I posted this because I could not find it in the errata. Clarification, please?

Actually, her "Abnormal Focus" special ability does not say she has no focus. It says that she does not SPEND her focus when moving skill sliders. This means that she always has 1 focus, that isn't spent on moving skill sliders, that can be spent elsewhere, eg: refreshing skills, used during an encounter, etc.

Or Yib-Tstll.

Focus is required in areas past the moving of sliders, so characters with custom slider abilities still need to have a number.

Okay, so there are skill tests that require the focus number to be used itself? Okay, but I still have the issue of the player stating he can use both, which that means his stats max out and stay maxed out. How do I explain to him that during his upkeep Trish the Spy needs to reset those sliders every time, or is he simply right?

Uhm. Read her special ability "Abnormal Focus", which states that every upkeep she MUST reset her sliders to lowest value and then move em 5 times? Or your player is retarded/can't read?

" Abnormal Focus - Upkeep: Trish does not spend focus to adjust her sliders . Instead, at the start of each Upkeep Phase, move her sliders all the way to the left . She may then shift her sliders to the right a total of five shifts.
Breaking the Limits - Upkeep: Trish may spend 1 Sanity or 1 Stamina for one extra shift to the right when adjusting her skills. She may do this up to three times per turn." -emphasis added by me.

Just as Mr Trololo said, give your friend an English lesson. "Does not spend focus to adjust her sliders" means EXACTLY that. Even after Trish has moved her sliders to the right a total of five shifts, she still has 1 focus, which she "Does not spend...to adjust her sliders." If your friend wants to keep moving Trish's sliders to the right, well, that's covered by her Breaking the Limits ability: she must spend 1 Sanity or 1 Stamina for each shift to the right beyond the initial 5, up to 3 additional shifts per turn.

Then, at the start of the next upkeep phase, and at the start of EVERY upkeep phase after that, she MUST move ALL her sliders all the way to the left and begin again. Move her sliders to the right a total of five shifts, spending 1 Sanity or 1 Stamina for each shift to the right beyond the initial 5, up to 3 additional shifts per turn.

Also,

Okay, so there are skill tests that require the focus number to be used itself?

There are also encounters that require focus. Then there are skill cards and spells that require you to spend all your focus to refresh them, causing you to choose between refreshing the card or adjusting your skills. Trish gets a freebee on those since she gets to adjust her skills regardless.
