First game last night...

By JawaNasty, in Battlestar Galactica

Every game you have of this is an instant winner - the constant needling around the table with accusations of "Traitor!" from the very opening turn, and the way everyone has to 'seemingly' pull together early on is all ruined with suspicion and mayhem by the later stages of the game.

It makes you feel especially elated if you can win as the humans, because of the close run nature of the game, with dials usually on 1 or 2 for a couple of commodities by the time you limp into Kobol - more often than not it ends in disaster - the game where admiral Adama was the traitor, picking jump cards that got us nowhere, and we still ended up sending Roslyn to the brig instead - a good Cylon player can make it very hard for everyone else.

Great game, and I think I will invest in it at some point.

Played our first game on the weekend, its a great game. Really enjoyed it! Totally recommend it. We nearly played again right afterwards, despite it being just after midnight on a "school night".

I have friends who never play board games lining up to play it.

And yeah, in our first game we had the Cylon player right from the start as the President and shortly after that Admiral (it was getting crowded in the Brig!) It was a short game!

I played this game yesterday for the first time with 2 friends. We played as Rosilyn, Starbuck and I took the Chief. The game took about 3.5 hours. I had read up on it and played it twice (solo) beforehand to grasp gameflow and some of the mechanics. I was nervous that the two friends I was introducing the game to wouldn't enjoy it, but we all had a blast and can't wait to play it again! Starbuck and I figured out Rosilyn was a Cylon just before we jumped and reached the Sleeper Phase, but we didn't do a very good job of hiding our suspicions. Rosilyn revealed her Cylon identity during her Action Phase and took off for the Resurrection Ship. Our game ended being very close. Starbuck and I got 2 jump prep spots away from winning the game, but Rosilyn did a great job of keeping the pressure on us... slowly weakening our Morale until we hit 0. What an amazing game! One of the things we all agreed on was that this game was a "breath of fresh air" from the other FFG's we play (WoW:tag, WoW:tbg and Descent). I would definitely recommend this game to others.

Hi, we had our first game two days ago. Five players: Tigh, Baltar, Agathon, Apollo and Tyrol (we only realized well into the game that that was a no-chicks game... although we had two female players)

Right from the start we had a bumpy ride. Even before my character Helo ever had a regular turn he was in the brig due to a failed crisis check. When the folks tried to free me we suddenly had a three skill card of the wrong color in the mix. Outch - Cylon Alarm. Sadly the wrong card was leadership - no clue whatsoever to the saboteur. Accusations flew, and I was even suspected of being a cylon sabotaging his own brig skill check in order to gain trust.

Well after that some other skill checks went soso, but again the bad cards were green or yellow which could have come from just anyone. We could not nail it. And suddenly we drew two cylon attacks in a row and had our hands full. Just then, Gaius 'Frakkin' Baltar decided it would be fun to use communications to rearrange the civilian fleet - to our disadvantage. We barely managed to save the fleet by jumping prematurely and brig the good Doc before he could use his reveal action.

That jump however triggered the sleeper phase. So with all but two VIpers damaged and Galactica shaken up we managed to get ourself to a new system. Distance at five, but Fuel and Moral down to 2.

Gaius decided it would be fun to commit suicide in the Brig and download to the Resurrection Ship. He took a special interest into how to redistribute the rest of his loyalty cards, so we figured, he had the other Cylon.

First crisis in the new star system was a Cylon attack. Because we only had two Vipers, Apollo barly managed to get into a cockpit using AVP. But I was stuck on Galactica without a Viper to man. When we asked the Chief to fix some Vipers, we figured we were wrong about Baltars Loyalty Cards. Suddenly half the ship blew apart. CIC, weapons control gone. Tyrol was a Cylon.

So now we had the minor problem of having no Vipers, three areas of the ship ripped to pieces and no Character genuinly able to get his hands on Technology Cards.

Two Super Crisis' later the remains of humanity were erased from the heavens. Still 3 Clicks away from Kobol.

We found it very entertaining, but the learning curve was high for some people. Getting a hang for the various actions possible with skill cards just takes some practice and reading, something that no one can talk you through when diguisting the rest of the rules. I personally find it quite annoying that there is no comprehensive player help/overview. Even the back of the rules wont tell you what you need to roll in order to jump prematurely without loosing population. Either you know this by heart, or you have to thumb through the rule book.

That being said, we will try it some other time, hoping to lead the fleet savely to Kobol.

Played my first 2 games this past weekend and LOVED it

We had 3 people just to test out the rules and found it to be a very quick game to pick up.

Cylons won both games, first game we got swamped with baseships and lots of raiders from the crysis cards and our admirl was the cylon and kept jumping us early killing our population.

2nd game the cylon did not come out until after jumping 4 times and the sleeper cylon was activated, raiding parties finally killed us.

took us about 5-6 hours to play the 2 games and loved the co op side it if.. esp after kicking the crap out of each other in Twilight imperium the past couple of months.

Personally loved playing the president, i was Roslin and enjoyed having an unique ability of the quorm deck.

We have a 6 player game arranged for this weekend and i cant wait.

If it makes you feel any better, UhOh, one of the first times we played I accidentally put one too MANY Cylon cards in and our group suddenly discovered that three of the four players were Cylons. Needless to say, the remaining Human was less than impressed. We played it out and the fleet was torn apart very, very quickly. It was very interesting to see how tight the game balance actually is.

The next time we played, the same player who had been the lone human was playing again and he, jokingly, asked that I had nothing to do with the card set-up. I let him do it and we then had to reshuffle because he had accidentally included the sympathiser card in the first round.

We're getting better at this...

Our first game was brutal... Just 3 players controlling Gaius, Boomer and Bill Adama...
Early on we started suspecting Boomer to be a Cylon...
And Gaius had a chance early on to check all loyalty cards So we forced our Cylon out into the open early on.

Big mistake.. In the end we managed one jump travelling the distance of 1, before getting swamped in endless Cylon ambushes.

Second and third games were more balanced.... That might be due to the Crisis Deck being more thoroughly shuffled or maybe becuase there were more players at the board.

After having played three times I think it's wonderfull to find out each games differes greatly from the last game played, and still the margin between success and failure seems to be really small in most games. Every game seems to be a race, and not untill the end you know if you're on the winning side.

Great game.

I wish we'd been able to finish our first game... the 3 humans had jumped 4 distance and were well on their way to a third jump (despite failing the crisis that sets the jump track back by one) but I, as Cylon (former Admiral) Adama (and the teacher of the game, it's funny how many people on this board have been in that position) had already revealed and was infiltrating the human fleet, doing damage to Galactica. In fact, at one point it was up to the die roll whether Galactica would have taken her 6th point of damage... but it was not destined to happen and I rolled a 1.

Things would have gone a lot better for me if I had read my Cylon card correctly. I was a Cylon from the start and I quickly read my card before putting it face down, since I didn't want to be caught studying the card as that would clearly give me away. I obviously couldn't check the card again later in the game, either. I THOUGHT it was the "can send 1 player to the Brig" card... so after the Sleeper Agent phase, when Boomer was brigged automatically and Zarek was sent to the brig as a sympathizer, I revealed, hoping to put Helo, the last human, in the brig and then let the whole crew languish there while I wreaked havoc from afar.

Too bad I actually had the "can damage Galactica" card. But not all was lost, I thought - Galactica had already been damaged twice by basestars and my card brought it up to four - and the "-1 fuel" damage token had already been resolved. Hence my decision to spam the Human Fleet action, which I would normally consider to be pretty weak unless you have a second Cylon helping out. I drew 2 Engineering every turn in hopes of draining the humans' chances of drawing Repair cards, but nevertheless they started pulling themselves out of the Brig as Boomer put what little repair skill she had to good use, counteracting my efforts.

If the game had continued I probably would have changed strategies, maybe switching out my Super Crisis for a more useful one and hitting them with that. The resource dials were all well into the red, except for population - the newbies were really good at protecting civilian ships and the only population they lost was from Zarek's choice on the Riots crisis. At any rate, we'll never know how the humans' journey ended...

Our gaming group also finished our first game thursday night, with Tigh, Zarek, Starbuck and Chief (cylon). At last I got to try this game, been waiting ever since I finished watching all three seasons that have been released on dvd here (in Finland).

I must say that besides the constant rulebook flapping ('cause I didn't had the time to playtest beforehand), the game was every bit as exciting as I'd hoped for. But it was a bit brutal for the humans, since when we finally did get the game and turns flowing, the crisis cards and constant cylon attacks (f.e. three in a row) had drained the population to four, and it was all downhill from there for the human fleet. And when the Cylon player finally revealed himself after 5 distance, it was all over.

Had we known how to move the vipers around and protect the fleet better from the start, we could have succeeded in keeping the population from getting drained so much, but at the same time we didn't yet have the chance to get the game tactics or board locations working very well due to lack of experience. But it certainly got our mouths salivating for more, and I can't wait to play some more and get to know the cards and strategies better. Also, succeeding in skiil checks proved to be more difficult than I anticipated...

All in all it was great fun, with all the paranoia and accusations, very thematic and I'm sure it will only get better with the Pegasus expansion!
