Solo play advice.

By jhagen, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

What do you all think to taking 2 turns to each evil ones 1 for solo play in the main game?

I was thinking to speed up play overall.

Speed up "play", or speed up "winning"? gran_risa.gif

Depends on your motivation. If you're just starting out, and still learning basic gameplay, I think it's an decent House Rule until you can toss away your training wheels. But it will make your games easier (a LOT easier); in fact, it might make them a bit boring, as the game will not be replenishing resources as quickly as you will be gathering them. You may find yourself with odd moments of "it's TOO quiet". Which leads to...

If you're trying to "speed up" the game's duration, then you will probably do that, but you won't really be playing AH in the meantime. I promise you, the game will speed up naturally as you get acquainted with the rules, the game phases, the locations, basic strategies. I would be better for you if you didn't rush it.

If you're trying to specifically play with only one Investigator to see how AH plays, then altering it with such a drastic rule will pretty much ruin that experiment.

Once you've gotten the basics down, might I suggest that instead of taking two turns, you play with two (or more) Investigators? I found, early on, that with more than one Investigator, there's less chance of "down time" (stuck in Jail, delayed, Lost in Time and Space) if you have another Investigator to play while one is stuck.

It would be more balanced if you counted it as two investigators when determining the monster limit, open gates limit, etc.

Also, what jgt said.

I think it'd be fine doing it. Maybe a little easier than using two investigators, but not much. If you do do it, yeah, definitely count the one as two.

thanks guys i will do 2 investigators next time i solo.
