save cancels and double dupes

By oshi2, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

ok, lets say someone has a character with two dupes and is about to get killed. He discards a dupe to save, but it is cancelled with drinking the sea.

Can he discard the second dupe to save or is that response exhausted by the "limit one response per trigger" restriction?

Two duplicates give the unique card two different save responses. You may trigger the second one if the first gets cancelled.

Are you 100% sure on this one? If so I have been playing wrong. I always though you had only one shot to do the save per kill effect, and if it was cancelled, too bad for you. I thought multiple saves only came into play on the same character if for some reason it was scheduled to die twice in the same action window. For example discarding one dupe to save for claim, and the second dupe to prevent deadly.

It's not "limit one response per trigger" per se, more like "limit one response-initiation per response per trigger". For example, if you won an unopposed challenge with Bloodthirsty Crew with an Assault of the Kraken in hand and the Knight knelt, you would be able to trigger the Bloodthirsty Crew's topdecking response, stand the Knight and play your Assault of the Kraken, all for winning an unopposed challenge. You don't have to pick one response you want to trigger, you can trigger all of them in whatever order you desire.

Saving works the same way, so long as you have save/cancel effects left in your arsenal, you may keep playing them until the character in question is safe as houses.

100% sure. All responses, regardless of their effects, exist independently of one another, and may be triggered at the correct time even if a similar response had been previously cancelled. There's nothing in the rules to suggest that saving works any differently from, say, triggering two different card-draw responses from the same trigger. One may be cancelled, but you'll still be able to draw from the other.

I understand how responses work, My point was the text regarding duplicates can be read two ways.

The way i was proposing it might be read was "While a unique character has a dupe, it has 'response:discard a dupe to save'" in which case the character only has one instance of the "response" and after using it he would not be able to use that response again(for the same kill effect) even if another dupe was available to discard. other saves(iron mines, etc) can follow up to save just fine.

But! the way eloi said it works is "for each dupe a character has, it gets "response:discard a dupe to save"", in which chase it is indeed different responses. where you can trigger both without fear of limiting themselves, as you so explained.

Just another case of "thats just the way it is".
