How far can a dwarf see in the dark? What range?

How about in the dark with the following:

Candle

Torch

Multiple Torches

jh

WFRP 1st ed -> Dwarfs night vision 30 yards. "They see extremely well in the dark. The darkness should not be complete - such as at the bottom of a deep mine shaft or down a dungeon - but light sources giving the same level of illumination than starlight will allow this talent to operate".

WFRP 2nd ed -> Exactly the same description.

Source Normal Vision Maximum vision (detecting only big objects: walls...) Spoting distance of the light source

Match 2 yrd 6 yrd 6 yrd

Candle 6 yrd 16 yrd 10 yrd

Lamp 6 yrd 16 yrd 10 yrd

Torch 10 yrd 30 yrd 20 yrd

Lantern 16 yrd 40 yrd 30 yrd

Camp fire 16 yrd 40 yrd 30 yrd

Therefore, following the definition of the talent, I would say that in total darkness a Dwarf can see perfectly up to the Maximum vision distance provided by the light source.

If the light source is not set up in total darkenss, for example in the woods, under starlightre. The dwarf can see perfecly up to 30 yards, and if he is carrying a lantern he can see big objects like trees or wall up to 40 yrds (to keep it simple).

I forget something relevant

The illumination table I wrote comes from WFRP 2nd ed. To translate it to the abstract distances of WFRP 3rd ed I would take the ranges of crossbow and longbow to normalize everything. Since crossbow and long bow had a range of 30 /60 (120) yards, 60 yards being long range and 120 yards being exterme range, and taking into account that both weapons can shot at long range in the abstract range descritption WFRP 3rd ed. I would suggest

Close range: 0-2 yards

Medium range: 2-30 yards

Long range: 30-60 yards

Extreme > 60 yards

Medium is more like 10-30, and Close 0-10. Actually, I'd even say Close is 1-10, and Engaged is 0-1.

If you are close enough to whisper and touch, you are engaged, whether or not you are required to spend a maneuver to do so.

Anyway, I do agree with Yepesnopes. Vision distance for elves and dwarves would be equal to the illumination distance of the light source, since this edition uses an abstract range method.

IMO:

In general candles and small lamps illuminate Close range.

Torches and most lanterns illuminate medium.

A few specialized light sources might be able to illuminate up to Long, but would be fairly rare.

Keep in mind that even with a light source nearby, there is usually a darkness penalty. Complete darkness is approximately [bBBB]. A candle or small lamp will typically still impose [bB] or so, but actually allow "sight". Dwarves and elves therefore are superior in such dim light. They do not really see "farther", but they see much clearer since they ignore [bB] darkness penalties. So torchlight is like daylight for them, while humans still struggle to see clearly.
