Historical Society encounter question.

By Miraran, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

I am taking an Arkham Encounter (base game) in the Hist. Society, and one Cindy Flemmings offers to show me something at Black Cave. If i accept, i relocate to Black Cave, draw two encounters, and pick one of those.

However, there is currently an open gate at this location, but no monster. If i accept mss. Flemmings' offer, do i;

1)Draw two Arkham encounters, play out one, and then enter the gate?

2)Enter the gate as per normal?

3)Enter the gate as per gate ambush, being Delayed as a result?

4)Draw the Arkham encounters, and ignore the gate? (Unlikely!)

Thanks for your thoughts.

My guess would be 2).

I have red the answer to this question somewhere, but I can;t remember where???

If you are playing book rules then you are sucked in the portal. If you ae playing from the house rules then you would draw the 2 encounters, choosing one.

It's also possible that the gate replaces the Black Cave, so there is no Black Cave to relocate to. In that case, the Historical Society encounter would not occur.

No I think the current official answer (it has been reversed once) is that you don't deal with monsters at the target location, and you enter a gate if it's there. By extension, you probably shouldn't be allowed to take clues on the target location, but that's not officially clarified.

Since it is the encounter that moves the player, and the encounter is done after movement, then neither the clues or the monster are delt with. Clues being taken at the end of movement, and combat with monsters already on the board is done during the movement phase. The player would then sucked in the gate, and I think delayed. (not sure on the delayed part)

I don't think the player is delayed. I think that's reserved only for gates that open on the player.

If there was an open gate at the location, I don't think there would be any clues to pick up anyway.

True, that was in more of a response to Tibs than to the OP.

I just played it as per #2, for convenience. It kinda defeated the whole idea of having the encounter, but fortunately it was optional either way. :)

#2 is the correct answer. You move to the Black Cave, if you choose to do so. SInce the location - and any encounters - are replaced by the gate, you do not get to do any of the encounters. If a monster is there, you ignore it according to the latest official ruling.
