Newb palying for the first time.(Question 1 of ???):)

By zk_wylde, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hello,

My buddy and I have picked up this game and are new to any living card game. We are sort of getting the main idea, but there are a couple of questions I have right now and I am sure that I will have more questions another time.

Question 1: When I declared my attacker for a military challenge, my buddy had a character with the ice weapon attachment (Challenges: While attached character is participating in a challenge, kneel and discard Ice from play (cannot be saved) to choose and kill another participating character.)

If my character has more strength than his defender, would he still be able to use the weapon to knock out any of my characters?

Question 2: Do locations stay on the board throughout the whole game?

Question 3: How many limited cards can you have out during the game? If only one, do we discard the limited card in play to bring out the new one from our hand?

Question 3: When we use duplicates, the duplicates only act as bodyguards, correct? Like, I can't add up all the STR from all the attached duplicates and use that total when attacking?

Question 4: Can you attack and defend with more than one character?

There are more questions to come, I am sure of it. We have read the guide online. These are just a couple of questions we may have misinterpreted if it was wriitten in the guide.

We would appreciate any help, for this is our first LCG, and would like to get in depth with this game eventually!

Thank you!

Mark

First of all, welcome to the game! I hope you are enjoying it so far! Where are you from btw?

Now onto the questions!

1. Yes. Ice can be used to kill a character regardless of its strength.

2. Any card type (other than events) stay on the field unless otherwise stated. Examples include Narrow Sea (its says it must be discarded for its ability) or Fleeing to the Wall (it discards all but two locations per player.)

3. You are mostly correct. You only count the strength once. The duplicate is a blank, titleless. However, it can be discarded to save a character from being returned to hand or from being returned to deck also. Bodyguard only saves from being killed or discarded.

4. You may attack or defend with as many characters as you want, as long as they have the correct icon. When determining the winner of a challenge you add up total attacking strength and total defending strength, with ties going in favor of the attacker.

Let us know if you have any other questions!

Thank you soo much! Especially for the haste response.

First off, we are enjoying the game so much. Second, I am from North Royalton Ohio. Close to Cleveland.

As for the Ice weapon attachment..does that go for either way? Like does it work for my buddy if he attacks or defends with that attachment?

If his character has that attached and is defending, and i have a higher STR than him, does he still lose the battle and chooses which character to die according to the plot claim? Would he still be able to use the weapon to kill off my character after i defeated hs character who had that weapon attached?

Sorry if it sounds rather confusing..lol. Kind of hard to explain what it the way I am thinking it.

Thanks again!

  1. Players can use "Any Phase" or "Challenges" effects
  2. The Active Player initiates the challenge by saying what type it is, which player he is attacking, and which characters he is using/kneeling to attack with.
  3. Players can use "Any Phase" or "Challenges" effects
  4. The attacking player chooses targets for stealth, then the defending player uses/kneels characters to defend with.
  5. Players can use "Any Phase" or "Challenges" effects
  6. The challenge is resolved by determining the winner, settling claim, awarding "unopposed," awarding "renown," the passive effects to any of that (like Deadly), the Responses to any of that (like Robb Stark).

So, Ice, as a "Challenges" effect, can be used in 1, 3, or 5 above. However, since the attached character must be "participating" - and characters start participating in either 2 or 4 - you will never be able to use him in 1, only 3 or 5.

Since the challenge winner is not determined until #6, though, when you DO use Ice in 3 or 5, the character that dies is completely gone by the time you get to resolving the challenge, and is no longer part of that determination.

So, if you attack with 1 character - no matter how big it is - and your buddy defends with the guy who has Ice, then uses Ice, your character dies in #5. So when you go to resolve the challenge in #6, the only character in the challenge is his (now "Ice-less") defender. So he's going to win the challenge.

Oh OK, I think there is a meta in Cleveland. You might want to check the Metagame Discussion board for their contact info.

I know what you mean. I think it will become clear once you break down the timing during challenges. It gets a bit more complex than this, but this is the basic sequence.

Step 1. Declare challenge and attackers.

Step 2. Player action window - This is where you can use events or card abilities that have a bold phase in front of the ability. So something that says Challenges: or Any Phase:

Step 3. Declare stealth

Step 4. Declare defenders

Step 5. Player Action Window - this is where you would use Ice since this is where both the attacker and the defender have characters in the challenge now. If Ice is used here the character that is killed will leave play before the challenge resolution.

Step 6. Challenge resolution

Step 6a. Add up attacking and defending strength and determine winner

Step 6b. Claim occurs - This is where you move a power to your house, discard a card, or kill a character.

Step 6c. This is where passives will trigger, so things like Jorah.

Step 6d. This is where you can trigger responses like Die by the Sword.

So to get back to the original questions: Ice can be used while attacking or defending. It is an option on whether or not to use it though. So it doesn't HAVE to be used if there aren't any characters controlled by the other player or there aren't any you want to kill in the challenge.

If you attacked with two characters, your buddy could defend with a character that has Ice. He could use Ice to kill one of your characters. When it comes time to see who wins the challenge you would only count the one character you have still alive and his character.

Hopefully that all makes sense.

EDIT: Ninja'd by Ktom!

Thank you for the responses!

As for limited cards..only one can be played on the board? If so, do we discard the one from the board to put in play one from our hand?

Oh! I missed that question! Anyway, you have as many limited cards out as you want. However, you can only play one limited card per turn. The setup phase is considered separate from the first turn. So you can lay out one limited card on the set up. One on turn one. One on turn two, etc.

Thats alright. Thanks for answering that for me!

Now,..say if there is an unopposed attack with the military challenge. My opponent has 0 STR or no defending characters left. I know the book say to claim one power for the unopposed win. Does the opponent still need to kill off on of his characters according to the claim from the plot card?

Yes, he does. When you win a Military challenge as the attacker, your opponent must kill X of his characters (X=claim value on your revealed plot card). On top of that, you also claim one power if the challenge is unopposed.

Yes, claim is still fulfilled during an unopposed challenge. The extra power is in addition to anything else that happens. Its kinda like a bonus.

I like this part of the title of this thread: "(Question 1 of ???)".

I recommend reviewing the FAQ at here as it will help you tremendously answer many questions, especially with the timing as to when to resolve different effects and game mechanics.

Some good terms/phrases to search for in the FAQ when you're ready:

duplicate
passive
triggered
player action
response
immune
immunity

Basically, you will find 80% of the answers there and plenty of answers to questions you didn't even have yet!

Don't worry - I am not trying to discourage you from asking on the forums, but the FAQ is a fantastic resource!
