Languages in Anima

By Stack2, in Anima: Beyond Fantasy RPG

Okay, I know where the language list is found in the books.

Sadly, I cannot find how many languages my character should know. It's got to be in there somewhere, but I can't find it. Could someone please point me to where I can find this information?

Thanks!

What country is your character from? Depending on the country their native tongue could be Latin all the way to Yamatto Shu.

A character definitely knows his/her country native language. Depending on his/her "history" level he/she might know additional languages.

This is a slight problem with Anima. It does not really have rules for how many languages a character has, or how much wealth they should have, or good rules for structures (I don't remember the specifics but one session I believe we calculated the rules and a wood door is equally hard to destroy as an entire wood cabin), etc. I do not know if this is because they did not think about it or if it was not important to them.

If it was important for my campaign, meaning there was an actual mechanical advantage to knowing multiple languages, I would probably give 1 language automatically, plus an additional language for every point of INT above 8 at character creation, and another additional language for every 30-50 points of History (depending on how many languages I have in the campaign).

If it does not give a mechanical advantage, I would leave it up to back story. Because it does not matter they can have 100 languages for all I care, if they explain it in their back story and role play it well anyway. For example a wizard scholar might know many languages, but a career soldier probably would know his native language and his enemies (at least insults). As that it would not give any real bonus over other players, it is merely a thematic change. Much like how a fighter decides their sword looks, if it changes nothing mechanically there is no reason to have to pay for it.

In the core rules (FFG version), on page 224, there are some rough guidelines:

"...it is advisable for characters with an Intelligence of 5 or below to speak their native tongue only. An Intelligence score between 6 and 7 would indicate two to three languages. Creatures and characters with Intelligence scores higher than 7 can speak any number of languages."

In my campaign, I assumed any PC whose native language isn't Latin also speaks Latin. One character has an Int of 7 and I rolled randomly for a bonus language and came up with a back story about why he spoke it. :)
