Can Dreadnoughts receive Fate Points?

By PrinceOfMadness, in Deathwatch

Odd question that occurred to me. One of the prerequisites for becoming a Dreadnought is that you must possess zero Fate Points. However, as a GM I try to hand out Fate Points for any of my PCs that manage to survive incredibly dangerous situations with either skill or flair. The big reason I'm asking is because I'm uncertain what, if any, situations would be considered 'incredibly dangerous' for a walking tank, that would also be within the acceptable threat range of the rest of the Kill-Team. I'm also uncertain as to whether a Dreadnought NEEDS Fate Points.

While I am not completely certain I would tend to believe that the requirement for zero fate points is more to represent the "Can no longer go on functioning" portion fo a space marine's existance that gets them pre-req'd for a Dreadnought's existance then an actual requirement they permanently have no fate points. If the Dred manages to do somethign suitably ntoeworthy to receive a fate point, which I get the impressiont he books intend to be rare but cna happen then sure I can see them receiving one.

Now personally while I'm certainly not knocking your running style in my own I tend to reserve fate point awards for situationw here the kill team has not only beaten the odds but there is some added benefit of heroism or divine favor involved in the matter. Saving a revered imperial shrine from tainting or the like.

Tankred endures. . .

I don't see why not. They may have used all of their FP's, but have a chance to keep serving the Emperor beyond death. The aforementioned Tankred fought a daemon prince (and won) and I can imagine that even a Dreadnought would need a FP or so to spend accomplishing that. Of course being a Black Templar didn't hurt either. :D

I see no reason why they couldn't. The requirement is there to represent the fact that the character went f.u.b.a.r. before they canned him.

Also, it's not like Dreds are tough enough that they won't need it from time to time.

I understand why a Dread should have no Fate Points when the Marine makes the transition, but I don't see why they shouldn't or wouldn't be able to gain new ones after they've been entombed. I'd allow it.

agree with hbmc....

i read manuals.....

when you become a dread...you can use the skill table 2.6....in this table you can choose killing strike, abhor the witch, etc...

now, in wich way you can use the killing strike and some other talentskill without fate points?

personally I suggest to remove some fate point when you became a dread as the "price of victory" deed....

and for gaining new fate points....not only danger situation can give you more points.

if the kill team recover a lost relic?

reconquest a shrine?

take the rearguard and front millions of enemy? (and if you was damaged, surely someone can recover you)

This is how I interpreted the requirement, myself. And this is the BEST description of becoming a dreadnaught I have ever seen! aplauso.gif

I know it doesn't quite convey the tragedy of a powerful hero falling in battle, nor the elation of him returning to service as an eternal engine of war, but it has a certain air of simple elegance, doesn't it? ;)
