Interested Again

By wittgenstein2, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Hi :)

I was interested in this game before, but for one reason or anohter, I never got serious with it. I've read many a review, at least a long time back, and something always made me shy away from it. It was the organisation, and in particular, I wasn't sure what I needed to play. This was exacerbated by 'how' FFG put out supplements for it over the ensuing months, and when they released the books. I'm not going to let that stop me anymore, I've decided to go for the boxed offerings. What with Christmas coming up and all that...

I just watched a little vid on youtube, it was about how disease is presented in the game: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezY5gSkul0o

That really piqued my interest once more, but I have a few questions I was hoping someone could answer for me.

1. I have 4 players, what would I need to play?

2. What's the errata listing like?

3. Has the organisation in the boxed set been tidied up at all?

4. I'll want players to be able to cast magical spells, be they 'clerical' or 'arcane'.

5. Is this a good price: £54.99 found here = www.play.com/Gadgets/Gadgets/4-/12455212/Warhammer-Fantasy-Roleplay-Box-Set/Product.html?searchtype=allproducts&searchsource=0&searchstring=warhammer+fantasy+roleplay+3rd+edition&urlrefer=search

Thanks all for your time and effort, I appreciate it.

The core box gives you enough basic actions for three players. There are basic action references avaliable on FFG's website though. Our group photocopied a set of basic actions. The adventurers toolkit also holds an extra set of basic actions.

To answer your question, you could go with only the core box and photocopy a set of basic actions (or print the reference sheet). Or you could get the core box and the adventurers toolkit (which also contains fun careers and other good stuff as well).

Extra dice, dice rolling apps or something to that effect is also good to get, but initially we passed the dice from the core box around and it worked well (we were 5 players and one GM at that point) allthough it slowed the game down a bit.

The errata is quite good and not that super long (I've seen games with much bigger erratas), easy to print and bring to the game.

I think the core box looks like it allways has, so well, there are some organization to do. There are lots of tips on organization avaliable on this forum. Also, the reckless dice podcast has an episode which covers the subject.

Both sorts are avaliable in the core box. 3 different wizard orders and 3 faiths for priest (with different kinds of spells/blessings depending on order/faith), so there is enough to start with. There's also expansions both for wizards and priests which add more orders/faiths and more spells/blessings.

I believe that my core box cost more than that, about £60-65 I think. So in relation to what I payed 55 is allright, but I'm honestly not sure what's considered to be a good price.

Good luck with the gaming! :)

Thank you for your reply!

1. Grab some pre-gen characters from Liber Fanatica #7

2. Errata isn't complicated. Some misspellings and they nerfed the spear to be a little less "300"-like ;)

3. The organization is not optimal, but I hear that The One Ring RPG suffers from the same problem now too, so I guess misery loves company in this industry ;) You "just gotta know". Having the player's guide on PDF and hardback changed everything for our group though. People can now work on their characters at home, etc.

4. There are 4 books JUST on spellcasters. The system is fine, but it eventually lacks spell depth. It's not D&D. One house rule is that if players find spells from outside their order or faith that are appropriate, we just rename them and make them applicable. There's plenty of spells, it's just that they're tied up closely to each order or faith.

5. As to the price, you could keep your eyes open for a used core box. The PDF at drivethrurpg.com for the player's guide is $25 and is a very fine addition, as it has all of the careers and abilities up to the beginning of 2011 and your players will appreciate being able to work on the characters at home.

Best,

1. Get the Adventurer's Toolkit. You won't regret it.

2. What the other's said.

3. I've spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to get all of my components organized, but there are resources to help.

4. Wizards and Priests are well represented, and VERY flavorful. Get Winds of Magic and Signs of Faith.

5. For brand new, that's pretty good. Here's one for $60 (about £38) javascript:void(0);/*1323738094469*/ that will have a barely beat up box and good-as-new books and components. Assuming you live in the UK, though, the cost of shipping might not be worth it.
