Deckbuilding Help-Kit

By qkershner, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Simple question:

As I continue to build decks in the LCG world, I continually find that there just aren't enough of the 'core' cards. Has any thought been given to putting together a "Deckbuilder Kit" of cards? What I mean by that is (for example) I have about a dozen decks built. Since many of them are thematic, I don't any issues filling out the characters/attachments. However, I am always short when it comes to the locations and events that are seemingly 'standards'. I end up trying to remember where I put all the Distinct Masterys and Bowl of Browns, or if this deck is the one with my other Valar. Don't even get me started on Power of Blood. I am likely not going to buy another chapter pack, just to get a single card. However, if there were a chapter pack that say, had 3 more copies of each Street, a run of the more generic, but useful Seas and Roads, a handful of the (debatable) standard plots, maybe 5-7 core/generic events. I'd buy that in a second. Probably more than one.

Personally, I'd love to improve my collection from the perspective of deckbuilding, without filling in another set of the more unique, or difficult to use, cards. Just a thought.

This was discussed in some detail here .

I, personally, have never felt the need for such a pack. If I really want to build a 4th deck, I'll throw in a few proxies; even a slip of paper with the card title is all I need for "Staple" cards (no one forgets what they are). I realize it's of far greater appeal to someone who supplies all the decks for their gaming group, but that's not the case for me.

And that's on top of the logistics of picking the "most used" cards.

I'm sure FFG is in a huge rush to put out a pack of 'best of' cards too. I mean, why would they want people buying 8 or 9 packs when they could just get all the best cards in 1!

I think you guys are missing the point.

1) Proxies are a nice way for players with limited funds and limited access to cards, but for many of us (I say that, ASSUMING I know what I'm talking about) cards are always better than pieces of paper.

2) I'm not suggesting that FFG choose the "Power 9" and print them, effectively reducing the likelihood of standard chapter packs being printed. What I am suggesting, is that there are a select set of generic cards that are regularly used in deckbuilding, and that they would benefit from making them available as a chapter pack of their own. For example, based solely on the group I play with, every member of the group would be willing to buy at least 1, and maybe more, of a deckbuilding pack that had 3x Streets, and 3x of each of the trait tutors. NONE of this same group, is willing to buy another chapter pack with 19 cards that aren't generically playable, just to get a set of one generic.

I have 6 street of steel... and they're limit one per deck. That's just from buying 3 core sets and each deluxe expansion. All the other cards you're mentioning are limit 1/deck (And I have at least 3 of each) - you'd have a stronger case for "Power of Blood" or "Forever Burning", (for instance). I'm not sure what you mean by Trait tutors... "At the Gates" "Time for Ravens" are the only two I can think of (maybe Family Duty Honor?), unless you mean Summoning Season, Building Season, and Spending the Winter stores. All of them come either x3 in a CP or deluxe expansion, or x1 in a core set (which buying three of is NOT a waste if you're building that many decks), with the one unfortunate exception of "Time for Ravens" until it gets reprinted.

I think my point stands; you'd have trouble getting people to agree what the "most used cards" for deckbuilding are, and it would generally be targeted at the very specific subset of people who maintain more than 3 decks. It's just not all that lucrative a prospect for FFG, and not that enticing a prospect for me, as a player.

Is that really the minority of players though?

I seriously doubt it.

They might be in the minority in online forum communities, but I'd wager they're the majority of actual Thrones buyers.

Personally, I know for a fact that I'd buy at least one pack that contained more copies of stuff like Valar, The 'Mutual' Plots, Power of Arms/Blood, Summoning/Building Season, Seductive Promise, Westeros Bleeds, The Streets, Support of the Kingdom, Retreat, etc (i.e. the Core Set stuff that everybody wishes they had several playsets of / could run in 3+ decks at any one time, but which is slightly unaffordable because multi-buying Core-Sets isn't exactly cheap).

On the other hand, I realise that it's highly unlikely that FFG will ever publish a product that undercuts the Core Set. Not only is it another item for them to organise the production and distribution of, but it's a product that could irritate retailers who feel that it was dampening their sales of Core Sets

OT-pieces of paper are so 90s ;) Now everyone with a printer can get good looking proxy which could be put on top of some crappy card in the sleeve.

But yeah I'm slowly working on replacing all of them with orginals :)
