Size Does Matter - Part 2. Creating that 1/60th medium walker

By Airborne3, in Dust Tactics General Discussion

Following from my last post I am going to show you how to turn our medium walkers to perfectly match our figures. You will require some items, ie milliput, brass or steel tubing and rods, US jerry cans (usually in packs of 10 or 12), 50 cals with side ammunition box (usually in packs of 4 or 6) and a barrel of your choice along with the tip from an old biro. Start by gently taking apart your pounder, obtaining three sections - body, turret and legs. Put aside the legs as they need no attention. The following can be used for any medium walker - take the body and gently put a screw into the centre of the turret ring, making a hole. With your best craft knife or scalpel cut out the centre of the ring, making sure not to damage the raised ring. Dust plastic is the softest medium I have ever worked with. It shouldn't take long to remove the circle. This ring will actually hold the turret in place quite tightly and is a perfect fit. If you wish, you can now open the front hatch by carefully pushing from the inside, allowing you the luxury of a driver. On the body at the rear right hand topside, is a radio aerial bracket, remove this item (it will stop your turret being able to turn 360 degrees). It will be replaced with a new aerial later. Finally, on the body an optional choice is if you wish to replace the plastic load rings with metal. These are very thin and may break when trying to cut out the turret ring. You will require four. They are a simple upside down U. Two at the front and two at the back. Finally fill in any holes from removing the aerial bracket with milliput. The body is now finished. Next the turret - whatever version you are building, with the exception of steel rain, remove the missile support brackets (four) from the side of the turrets. Gently remove the two jerry cans. Once your new choice of barrel has arrived, saw the barrel cast from the front of the manlet . Replace this with the tip from a biro. Glue the barrel first to the biro tip then, when dry, cut a small piece of rod and insert in the hole in the front of the turret, then glue the biro and barrel in place. The result is a moving gun. An option I chose, however, was to milliput over the vast open area a manlet canvas cover (tank crews prefer an area like this covered as it is less cleaning and saves possible damage). Fill in with milliput the four side holes from the removed support brackets plus the two holes from the jerry cans. From the inside, push gently on the top main hatch to open it for a crew figure. Cut a small piece, around 1/8th inch, of hollow tube for your 50 cal. Glue it to the top of the turret next to the hatch in photo. I have added four turret pins, one in each corner (the inverted U). Finally, to the turret's rear add two jerry cans, one each side. My walker has a crew storage bin added to the turret rear. I have done it as a field modification, not a stores acquisition part. It is supported by a standard paper clip and made from plastic card and cut down bits. Every walker I make will have a different style. I hope this post encourages you to try converting your own mechs. Have fun and keep building, playing and painting.

Could do with seperating the text into paragraphs, very difficult to read like this.
