Cards that reference specific cards (characters)

By DrJAT, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hi people,

I have a question about cards which reference or in some way affect or are affected by specific named cards. I'm thinking mostly characters here but I guess it could apply to anything.

A lot of cards refer to themselves by name in the third person; taking for example here Arya Stark from the Kings Landing chapter:

"... if it is winter, Arya Stark gains Stealth and Deadly.

If Arya Stark is killed, put her into Shadows instead of your dead pile"

My question, therefore, is: can such effects affect other cards which share the same name? For example, if my opponent also has Arya Stark in play can that version also gain stealth and deadly if it is winter?

Thanks

A card that uses its own title only references itself. So another version of Arya Stark controlled by another player wouldn't gain Stealth and Deadly if you have King's Landing Arya in play. On the other hand, a card that uses the title of another card references any card with that title (unless otherwise specified). Here's an example with both:

Cersei's Attendant (Core Set L50)

House Lannister

Cost 1 STR 1 INT

Ally

Response: After Cersei Lannister or Cersei's Attendant is killed, choose and kneel a character.

The reference to Cersei Lannister means any card titled "Cersei Lannister", so you can use the response if a Cersei Lannister controlled by another player is killed (and you can use each Attendant's response in this case). On the other hand, the reference to Cersei's Attendant means the card the response is printed on, so you cannot use it if a Cersei's Attendant controlled by another player is killed (and if one of your Attendants is killed, you cannot use the response printed on other Attendant you control and haven't been killed).

FAQ entry for future reference:

(3.12) Self-Referential Cards
When a card refers to its own name (e.g., the
Catelyn Stark (CORE S6) card that reads,
"Response: After Catelyn Stark is declared
as a defender..."), it is referring to itself only.
This response cannot be triggered when an
opponent's Catelyn Stark is declared as a
defender.

Awesome, thanks guys!
