The Grand Melee Chapter Pack

By Stag Lord, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Anyone else underwhlemed by this CP?

I like euron, i like Robert, teh Stark guy who raises Claim v opposed title is cool and - the Plot is interesting....but apart from that nothing really jumped out at me. its nto about teh melee stuff 0 i liek that just fuine - i'm just not seeing a whole lot of good stuff in this one. The Targaryen stuff is horrendous and teh rest of it seems sort of vanilla.

While I generally agree with you, I'm left wondering if you've had a stroke or something. You were doing so well there for awhile! Hardly any typos! Then you type a post that reads like it was a Bob Dylan song verbatim.

I'm not that much underwhelmed to be honest.

It seems like there is always at least one chapter pack in each cycle that appears to have less helpful cards than the others. That being said, it seems like the trend is that each chapter pack helps 1 or 2 houses a lot more than the others and that 1 or 2 houses get the shaft. In this case, Targaryen got the sh*tty end of the stick in The Grand Melee.

would you say Targ

got burned?

It was a masterfully constructed chapter pack. The idea that powerful uniques should direct melee play was in excellent idea. I imagine that Targ received a weak, boring non-unique because they're pretty overpowered in melee. Seriously, we must put a stop to that silver-haired witch and her pack of lizards.

These are dangerous words, playgroundpsycho. We are watching you with a thousand eyes and one.

I dunno, I can think of several positive things about it:

Bought and Paid For: Lannister has needed some in house attachment control for some time (though, admittedly, maesters are such good neutral control that it's a bit moot). Regardless, this is a great, thematic way for them to have a touch of attachment control.

Doran Martell: The version of Doran that we've been waiting for since Crown of Suns in the CCG era. Hugely useful in both joust and melee, I think he hits the perfect sweet spot of Ned/Jaime/Shagga appeal.

Euron Crow's Eye: Similar to Doran in just being an all around great card in joust and melee, though just the face that we've already had several good to great versions of Euron over the years means I'm not quite as excited.

Khaleesi's Faithful: Somewhere between Ellaria Sand and Claw Isle, but not quite as strong as either, I still think this card is fantastic for Targ in Melee as this sort of thing isn't normally their thing.

Old Bear's Crow: Wow, sure he's vulnerable to several forms of weenie and Raven hate, but he's a huge boost to the NW decks that never could quite get off the ground. I know there were several players in our group that were trying to make them work last year, and I'm sure with the Raven around, we'll see people trying again this year. And who knows? This might be enough to help them get over that hump. I just wish it had been available last year, as the cannot be bypassed and the +1 STR boost would have helped NW match up against Wildlings so much better.

Overwhelmiing Numbers: Again, a card that should be a solid boost to help push a Tier 2 to 2.5 deck up into the 2 to 1.5 range. Dothraki decks can be really nasty when they get to trigger all their responses to military challenges, but enough control to disrupt that single challenge brings them to a screeching halt. I can see Overwhelming Numbers being used to help a couple weenies push through and start the chain going again once the board stalls.

Robert Baratheon: Wow. Ned Factor x10.

The Smalljon: Just like Varys and Arya, we continue to see some innovative uses for Title references. I think this sort of thing is going to bring a really great dynamic to melee games.

Varys: Probably the most interesting and mindblowing ability that I've seen in a long, long time. While it might be slightly more Nedly to bring him out of Shadows in order to redirect the challenge, this is still pretty freaking awesome. Looking forward to trying this at our melee tournament this week more than any other card.

YEAAHHHHHHH!

Sorry, I had to; that was awesome.

Kennon, the Old Bear's Crow has me looking at making a strong NW deck for tournament play. I think there is a build there now, if I can just find it.

I have two right now for casual play, but they centre heavily on The Wall (Bara and Neutral). Once they get going they are a real pain if your opponent can't deal with the one location.
