Guardian Wolf - Does it's ability apply to any challenge?

By BenStark, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hi everyone,

Another curve ball has been thrown my way and I need some help settling it.

Here's the situation. Player A initiates a power challenge against Player B. Player B defends with Bran Stark (LoW) and then spends one gold to bring Guardian Wolf out of the shadows, knelt as a defender and winning the challenge for Player B. Player A does not think this is a legal move, since Guardian Wolf does not have a Power icon, only a Military icon. However, Guardian Wolf reads "Pay the rest of Guardian Wolf's cost to bring it out of the Shadows, knelt, as a participant on your side in any challenge in which you control atleast 1 participating Lord or Lady character."

I would agree with Player B is this case, since the card reads in "in any challenge". And after that, the Wolf can only be used in military challenges.

Am I correct?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, you are correct.

Excellent. That makes that card alot more powerful now...

Icons are only required for characters to be declared as attackers or defenders in challenges. All other effects that make characters participate in challenges ignore icons. That's why Greatjon Umber's ability reads " Challenges: Kneel Greatjon Umber to have him participate in the current MIL or POW challenge as either the attacker or as the defender." Without the restriction about challenge type, he could do it in INT challenges too.

Also, consider Walder Frey - he doesn't have ANY icons, and obviously he gets to participate in challenges.

Though in his case, gets to may not always accurately describe the feelings of the player in question gui%C3%B1o.gif
