PCs cannot spend their fortune points to defend from an attack roll?
I saw this in another thread, is it true? I don't see why not ... if they can add a white die to their own pool, why not a black die to another's pool?

I believe that is correct, but I don't see anything wrong with allowing them to be spent on defense. Especially in an appropriately dramatic scene.
officially they are fortune dice. adding fortune dice to an opponents dice pool is unwise. however officially the power of YES is in place too. so if a player wants to use convert it to a misfortune dice say YES.

If someone is trying to hit you, I think adding a black die to their pool is fortune/luck for you
Correct.
However, the PC could spend that fortune point to remove a recharge token from an active defense card, making it usable when it might not be otherwise.
