If a character is attacked with Ice attcahed by ONE attacker only, can Ice be discarded and therefore kill the particpating attacker , end the challenge and thus save the character OR does Ice get discraded after the defender has resolved and then an attacker is killed as well as the defender ?

The character Ice is attached to must be participating in the challenge before Ice can be used, so in your scenario, it will need to be declared as a defender. But you would use Ice to kill the attacker before the challenge resolves, so you're pretty much going to win the challenge on defense if you kill the only attacker.

Note that as long as there is at least one participating character (on either side), the challenge doesn't end (until resolution). All players may still trigger effects (some of which could add participating characters). A challenge ends immediately without resolution (but still counts as being made) only if there are no participating characters at all.
