just discovered DT should i get the original box set?

By glassfish, in Dust Warfare

hi all,

I've just discovered Dust tactics. WOW what a great game. not over complicated, great miniatures. but you already know that.

i got the revised box and am thinking about getting the card tiles pack to replace the poster board that comes in the box.

does anyone know if the card tile pack has the same tiles as the original box set?

I've see the original box set for around £120 including postage. Would you say that was a good price? i know i would need to get the new squad cards.

[please delete - i just found the correct forum and the answer. Sorry]

The original starter is a great value for what you get and it is getting harder and harder to find as it is out of print and I don't think it will be reprinted. The tile set has a mix of both core sets - it does have everything you need to replace the poster maps in the second core set but not necessarily enough to cover the first core set unless you have some additional "inside" tiles from one of the expansion sets.

I would get the first core set while you can; it solves any tile issues you have and is a great set.

my friends and i have just started and really enjoy it-- if i already have revised, should i bother grabbing the original to expand and add options, or is it not varied enough?

The original Core box [if it can be found] is well worth the price. It has a completely different set of figures in it and is a GREAT way to expand your forces! I have both and do not regret it at all!

If you can grab two, do so. I haven't grabbed the second revised core yet, but I'll be getting another of those too. Excellent way to get the miniatures and squads. I play a lot more 40k, but with the original core box and some posterboard I've got 12 walkers plus all of my minis in one very sturdy box then put all of my tiles over in the revised core box. Misc stuff is just dumped in the other original core and it all can be dropped on one of my shelves for easy access & storage.

I'm also thinking of picking it up while I can, but really I'm mostly interested about Warfare so the rules for me are critical. I've gotten a mixed message about it being or not being like Tactics in its mechanics (which didn't have enough "meat" for me, I want the system to be able to highlight the differences in units better.

So ideally I'd want to read the rules before buying the expensive (although valuable for the money) core set, but that might not be an option for long...OTOH if I couldn't get it anymore that might discourage me off the game altogether if I had to pay more by buying individually.

Really, they should announce something already about the rulebook if it's supposed to come out this year, or otherwise announce a delay. My guess is that they're unsure if they can make it to the holiday market amidst all the rush and don't have an answer yet to give - at least I hope so.

It wouldn't be very good to know it won't make it but not announce a delay.

I was in luck and was able to reserve the last copy at a local shop, and I'm even able to return it in shrink wrap after Christmas if I don't like the rules for some reason.

Here's hoping they come out before then, but even so I can probably make my own back on Ebay or something if I keep it in the wrap, maybe more.

Those prices are ridiculous. My local gaming store still has it on the shelf for around $85.

The joys of the free market economy. People are willing to charge whatever they can, and some people are willing to pay whatever they have to to get what they want.

While the original Core Set is a great deal, at least the vehicles and squads it contains are available separately. The Operation Blue Thunder campaign was re-released in the Tile Set. That only leaves Sigrid and Joe as unavailable except in those boxes still floating around.

If I can find another, I'll probably pick it up, but once you have one Sigrid and Joe, the rest of the Core Set quickly becomes better purchased separately. Six squads is $90, and four walkers are $100, and the walkers in the Core Set only have very limited weapon options. You lose the Steel Rain and Lothar variants, and need to scrounge other parts unless you want to stay with one each of the Pounder, Hot Dog (or two Mickey's), Ludwig, and Luther. Official dice are nice, but you can use normal dice, or dice from the Revised Core Set, and there are tiles available in other boxes.

I'd love to see them release Sigrid and Joe some other way, as that would probably take a lot of price pressure off the remaining Core Sets, and let people buy them while still having money for other DUST models.

I'd also like to see the Revised Core Set light walkers released separately. I have less interest in duplicates of some of the Revised Core Set squads, but would like more of the walkers to play around with.

I haven't bought my second Revised Core set yet, but when I get back on track with my monthly DT buying plan, that one is on the books, mainly because I would like another pair of the walkers. It also doesn't hurt to have the extra squads, especially since if I do get the logistics together for a DT game day at the FLGS, I'll probably be setting up a bunch of ~150 point lists for people to play.

Could you send me the details of that store? marc_buckingham@me.com
