I was just wondering what is defined as an area. The rule book seems seems to call locations, streets, and the whole of Arkham "areas". So when it comes to cards like Heal or Coded Messages, is the "area" it refers to the same location, that whole street/neighborhood, or the board as a whole?
Question on areas.

Location and neighborhood are IMO clearly defined. Area/Space are not. My personal POV is that you can use say Heal (without checking the spell for specific wording) when in the same street as another investigator, when in same location and when in the same half of the OW (and of course have to be in the same OW
). If you can trade with another investigator, you're in the same area. Of course, other people have different interpretations, for say Flute of the Elder Gods' use of area.

Yes, they are clearly defined in the rules, unfortunately all of the definitions/descriptions seem to refer to them as "areas" as well
I prefer to focus on this description, on p. 21:
"The Arkham city section of the board shows the city of
Arkham divided into 9
neighborhoods
, each of which
has between 2 and 3 important
locations
in it, as well as
a
street
area (B)."
The rules about OW movement state that OW are divided into 2 areas (left and right).

So then cards like Heal can only be used in the streets or the OW?
No, I meant that those are what I go with when defining location and neighborhood. Area IMO can be location, street or OW area, but not neighborhood. Like the trading rules mention on p. 23.

Yeah, thats how I have been playing. I am fairly new to the game and was playing with someone who was defining "area" as the whole board, and that just didn't feel right to me. Thanks for your imput
Not saying my interpretation is the only one you can have, but I'd like to think it's a prevalent one among AH players
.
Rectangular boxes = "Street Area"
Round spaces = "Arkham Location"
Round half spaces = "Other World Location"
Rectangualr Boxes + connected Round spaces = "Neighborhood"
All Neighborhoods = "Arkham"
All Round half spaces = "Other World"
Arkham + Other World = Spaces / Areas
So if a card says "space" or "area" it is anywhere on the board that investigators can go. If it says "Location" it is specific to the Arkham or OW locations. The problem is, for as defined as this game is when it comes ot these spaces, they do mess up quite a bit and use the wrong terminology so you still have to look at it in context.
