I'd say yes, but then there would be no benefit for you (unless you are thinking about using your units sacrifice to trigger other cards in play.)

Same question if there is less than X cards in discard.

In other words, is the unit sacrified even if there is no valid target? And how is it resolved (reshuffle as much as you can...) ?

You can't, however, trigger it if X is 3 and you only have 2 cards in your discard, since you don't have enough legal targets to trigger the effect.

If X is 1, you also can't use it to target the unit that you sacrificed, since targets are chosen before costs are paid (and sacrificing the unit is a cost).
