Inquisitor Moving Unseen

By venkelos, in Dark Heresy Gamemasters

It would seem to me that many Inquisitors would value their independence, as it is, and not have to let too many external elements interfere with their missions. These men and women can often acquire almost anything, but thy often seem to have to make nice with some types, lest they end up stranded before they even start. Could an established Inquisitor (so Rank 9+) playing in Ascension, acquire a starship? Rank 1 Rogue Traders are gifted a whole ship, right at the beginning, so you would think that an Inquisitor could pull a few strings, and acquire one for his own use, lest his movements and actions be observed by others.

If one would attempt it, would it be an Influence test (minus the ship's Point total) to get it for a whole adventure (on loan from Battlefleet Calixis?) or minus the ship's Point total + 20 for permanent ownership? In that case, it would seem rather fair. The Sabre is an average good ship, at 50 pts. So Influence -50 would be a tough check, but doable, especially if you could call in a favor from the Lord Sector, while Inf -70 to own it outright, would likely be limited to Lords, but again, doable. What's the verdict, though?

Per Ascension table 1-8 on page 16; use of a starship (which could simply be booking passage) starts at Scarce for a commercial or Chartist vessel, and goes up to Near Unique for use of a Naval Vessel of Cruiser hull or larger. The average an Inquisitor would likely use would be a Frigate or other naval escort with an availability of Very Rare , then modify for duration as normal.

A Rogue Trader is receiving their ship either as part of their Writ of Trade, or in the form of an inheritance from their already existing Dynasty. It's a little different. But, I would apply all the modifiers for an Acquisition Test to an Influence test for an Inquisitor who is seeking a permanent vessel if they're looking for something other than "borrowing" naval assets. Personally, I like the Viper Scout ship as a choice for an Inquisitor looking to avoid much notice in his travels.

That's just my thoughts.

Thanks very much. It just seems weird that such powerful beings couldn't have their won ships. They can declare Exterminatus, but watch it from another's ship? While I could certainly see the advantages of keeping such individuals at least rudimentally dependent on the Imperium they protect, it would seem it could endanger their missions to always have to book passage on other ships, especially when they usually can't "I'm an Inquisitor" it; have to be nice to some people, no matter how big you get.

Still, having a small ship at their own disposal, nothing big, or world-ending, not hard to maintain, but quick, and okay in a running away shoot out, could be very useful, especially if the Cultists have already infested the upper echelons of the gov't where they are, or some such.

Again, thank you. When Battlefleet Koronus gets here, in the next few days. hopefully I'll be able to find a nice, small transport or raider to call his own.

It may be worth mentioning that there is always the option of using "That one thing I ask for you" and loosing 1d5 Influence permanently to aquire a starship. I can image quite a few starting Inquisitors willing to pay that price to gain a Raider or Frigate at the start of their career.

As soon as you have your own ship, "moving unseen" stops.

People will start to know "your ship" or will start to know that something is up if "this unidentified ship" will shop up in orbit. IF their is a control of what is going on in orbit.

If an Inquistior is booking passage on a vessel that is going this or that direction anyway or would not be out-of-the-line to bee seen in this orbit, things are much more stealthy

My 2 cents

To add to what Gregorious said, an inquisitor can always use some sort of fake ID so he can't be tracked when booking passage.
