Arkham Horror related movies

By Gary Manning, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

"Dreams in the Witch House" from Showtime's "Masters of Horror" anthology had much better press and production values, but what about "Crouch End" from TNT's "Nightmares and Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King"? (On DVD if nothing else.) I think Crouch End veers closer to Shadow Over Innsmouth in flavor, but casts a woman (Claire Forlani! gran_risa.gif) as the main protagonist. Less "scary" but rather visually interesting, plus it's fun to watch Forlani WIDE-EYE everything as a simple visit to a New England town goes horribly wrong. Variations on several Mythos names near the end.

Come to think of it, the whole tale could totally emulate how King would write up an Arkham Horror Session Report...

I haven't seen that one yet - I'll have take a look at it; another Stephen King on film that may qulify is "The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verill" segment from Creepshow, which I belive was directly influenced by "The Colour Out of Space".

By the way, I just wanted to say thanks for posting that excellent list, and I'd be interested in reading your Dagon review after you release it (so notify us or me).

A few years ago there was Stephen King's "The Mist".... King was very influenced by Lovecraft so the movie ends up somewhat resembling AH. ... the army accidentally opens a dimensional gate, release lots of monsters (and evil fog) into the town... and it has a VERY unhappy ending.

I'm glad you mentioned this - I LOVED this adaption of King's story (which is def Lovecraft influenced - the movie even more so). This and In the Mouth of Madness are my 2 favorites of the ones listed so far...

Watched "Dreams in the Witch House" this weekend. I was somewhat impressed that it stuck so closely to the story, but I was still disappointed that it didn't take place in the 1920s, and that they felt the need to inject a love interest and nude scene. It seems that Lovecraft movies can't be adapted without a gratuitous nude scene.

However, the ending took cojones and I'm glad they didn't cop out.

I'm not certain that's entirely accurate; I don't think that phenomenon is in any way specific to Lovecraft. What IS accurate is Premium Cable TV can't present genre work--certainly not cerebral genre work--without putting a gratuitous "easter egg" somewhere within each hour. Masters of Horror was a great series...for horror fans. But to get...>cough<...let's call them "less discerning individuals"...to keep watching, sprinkle in one rack, and they will assume that the NEXT episode will also have a rack. And if it does...ho ho, you have them for the whole season.
